The research question addressed in this project is: What training model was effective for training purpose?  This model was evaluated by three Taiwanese professors and three Taiwanese pastors.  This project involves two areas: (1) training strategies and (2) training contents.  The training strategies utilize Joyce's training model, which includes: demonstration, simulated practice, simulated environments, small groups, technology, and individual instruction. The aim was to determine the issues that are importnt to once-churched individuals and how to shape sermons on these issues. During the project, both churched and once-churches individuals completed surveys to determine their feelings about the church and their personal needs.  Four sermons were crafted in response to these surveys.  Participants listened to and responded to each sermon.  Changes were made to future sermons based upon the response each week. The secular world has no place for God, and church tradition has tended to emphasize God's transcendence.  As a result, God's presence needs to be revised in a way that is meaningful to contemporary believers.  It is my thesis that for my Latvian Lutheran congregation, the imagery of God that is found in our Godsongs, together with the dynamic relationship of God-and-the-world that is process thought, can offer creative possibilities for preaching God's presence in daily life.  The project examines the Godsongs which are part of the folkloric heritage of the Latvian people.  This ancient and pre-Christian tradition envisions God's relationship to the world in a way that is quite similar to process thought.  In both paradigms, God is ever-present in all of creation as shared divine wisdom and power. The Godsongs say that God is present and God helps in poetic images that speak to the heart.  Process thought addresses the mind; it models God-and-the-world in a way that makes sense to the scientific sensibilities of contemporary people.  The Godsongs and process thought provide new metaphors for preaching that address the whole person--head and heart.  As metaphors, they are partial but also illuminating.  Because they are 'heard' in a way that older metaphors may not be, they bring the hearer of the sermon into the preaching process by providing them with the opportunity to agree or disagree. One hundred-seventeen pastors from the Missouri East conference of the United Methodist Church responded to a 20-question sermon-preparation survey measuring how pastors establish priorities, study time, resources, prayer life, planning, and techniques. The sermon preparation process develops a synthetic outline, propositions (exegetical, theological and homiletical) for sermon portions and message outlines. The communication strategy designs sermons to persuasively preach elements of discipleship.  The spiritual journey evaluation measures congregational change in discipleship attitudes and actions.  The post-test assesses relative effects of other variables.  The congregation demonstrated increased discipleship, though the difference was not statistically significant. The research project consists of eight parishioners' responses to six imagistic sermons. The researcher concludes that the use of image plays a significant role in the transformation of the hearers and the preacher.  He suggets that while the use of images is one key in the transformational process, opportunity for sermon reflection is also important. This project presents an efficient and effective methodology for the mid-sized pastorate based upon five principles discerned by the researcher from studying the preparation process of fifteen pastors who were identified as excellent preachers. Ethnographic research was employed for the project and included a survey, interviews, a peer panel and self-testing of the methods.
