To do this, a “semantic differential” scale was designed and tested in various congregations including those of a liturgical tradition as well as those without such a formal heritage. The scale was used by laypersons to indicate their responses to specific video-taped gestures of their minister in the process of preaching a sermon in worship which they attended. Scores from the scale were then used as a basis for discussions between the laity and their minister concerning the ways in which his gestures were being understood. Three congregations, along with their ministers, became more aware of the relationship between verbal content and non-verbal gestures used during the preaching event. The project was conducted with only those persons who had the capacity both to listen and to see what was happening during the sermon. Leviticus","Sermons"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore how Reformed pastors can apply hermeneutical principles to preach through challenging texts with gospel application, and will use a ritual text from Leviticus as its model. This study utilized a qualitative design blended with the execution of a literary dissertation to gather extensive literature review from resources related to hermeneutics; to Ancient Near Eastern ritual and ritual practice in general; and to homiletical principles for Christocentric preaching. The literature review focused on gaining data with three research questions: What are best practices in navigating hermeneutical challenges in interpreting Leviticus? What are best practices in determining meaning in the ritual texts of Leviticus? What methods can be helpful to seeing the work of Christ in the Old Testament and specifically in Leviticus? \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas to understand in preparing for and preaching a text of scripture: the hermeneutical principles wisely applied to the study and preaching of any biblical text; the methods and mindset most helpful to the examination of a ritual text (for this study); and the theology and strategies conducive to Christocentric preaching from any text in scripture. Three areas of literature review were approved in order to make this a literary dissertation rather than a standard qualitative dissertation (one area). Research from several United States Catholic dioceses has shown that parishioners desire to hear engaging homilies when they go to Mass. This author holds that reading a short story a week inspires preachers to adopt short-story traits for their preaching, like unity, brevity, and open-endedness, all of which captivate listeners.This project’s intervention involved qualitative research with five preachers from the Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres in the southern United States. These preachers were asked to read short stories for twenty-six weeks and to allow their preaching to be evaluated approximately once a month for six months to see if their homilies would become more captivating. In this blind study, the preachers were not cued on what to look for in short stories, and the evaluators were not informed that the preachers were reading short stories. The goal was to see if reading short stories alone was enough to make homilies more captivating.The results from the twenty-six-week intervention showed no clear evidence that reading short stories helped preachers preach captivating homilies, except maybe in the case of one preacher who was already preaching narratively before the intervention began. What is clear from the intervention, however, is that narrative preaching is exceptionally good at captivating people. Further testing is warranted, with such corrections as taking a longer time frame to measure the effects of reading short stories and as preachers being informed about the nature of the intervention and the genre of short stories. Likewise, homiletics has long encouraged emotional preaching, calling communicators to wed together logos and pathos. Recent advancements in cognitive neuroscience stress emotions’ importance. Despite the Biblical, homiletical, neuroscientific, and cultural emphases, a lack of expression of emotion may be characteristic of homiletical methodology in the dominant American Protestant church culture.This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors of different races from reformed denominations. All six pastors were committed to emotional appeals in their preaching.  The literature review and constant-comparative analysis of the six interviewees focused on four research questions: how does a preacher appeal to emotions, how is the impact of a sermon measured, what obstacles stand in the way of emotional preaching, and how do these appeals correlate to cognitive neuroscience? The literature review focused on three key areas to understand a preacher’s appeal to emotions: homiletics’ emphasis on the use of emotions, cognitive neuroscience’s support for appeals to emotions, and the doctrine of illumination. This study concluded four things regarding appeals to emotion in preaching. Consensus exists between homileticians, neuroscientists, and practitioners regarding the importance of appealing to emotions. The effectiveness of emotional preaching outweighs the risks associated with it. No appeals to emotion are likely apart from preachers identifying with the emotions of others. The mystery of the Holy Spirit in illumination does not mitigate the necessity of emotional appeals. Four practices are recommended for preachers: Know your emotional God. Know your emotional self. Know the emotion of your scripture text. Perfection is defined not as a sermon that is free of errors but rather as a sermon that is mature and complete, arising out of awareness and knowledge of God that is received, in part, through the experience of receiving spiritual direction.Chapter 1 provides an introduction to spiritual direction through offering several definitions and a short history.Chapter 2 describes my experience of receiving spiritual direction and using that experience as a preaching resource.Chapter 3 provides an analysis of how the experience of receiving spiritual direction is useful in preaching. It is my hope to add to the diversity in our pulpits by offering an alternate sermon type that is simple to follow, and yet offers a variegated texture and feel through the use of the six different models.I believe a working definition of narrative preaching would help clarify things at this point.  Mine is as follows:  Any sermon that follows a plot or story line and begins with a discrepancy and then wrestles with the ambiguities and ultimately concludes with God's final solution.  The thesis of this project is that narrative preaching can be learned like spelling or arithmetic or your ABC's if the student is willing to follow a three step pattern of:  imbalance, analysis, and solution. The first step involves stating the discrepancy, the second step is an analysis of the ambiguities and the third step is finding God's solution to the problem. It suggests that metaphor is the basis of illustrative material. The paper is composed of four chapters and a bibliography.Chapter One discusses preaching as oral communication. The emphasis of the chapter is on the preacher as communicator. Obstacles to communication are examined and ways to overcome the obstacles are suggested. The use of metaphor as an aid to communication is emphasized.Chapter Two examines communication in terms of the hearers. Audience analysis, cultural influences, and the hearer's perception of the world are cited as information areas the preacher will want to consider when preparing the sermon. The use of metaphor to help build meaningful relationships is discussed.Chapter Three focuses on metaphor as an aid to preaching. A Biblical basis for the use of figures of speech in preaching is studied. Metaphor is defined by its function and value for illustrating sermons. Types and sources of metaphors are explored. Practical concerns, such as the placement and quantity of metaphors in a sermon, conclude the chapter.Chapter Four is concerned with the evaluation of metaphors and guidelines for their use in preaching. At the conclusion of a sermon, immediate feedback is useful for measuring the clarity of a metaphor, but long-term feedback is also necessary to evaluate the appropriateness of the metaphors to the hearers by observing the assimilation of the metaphors into their life and vocabulary. In more extreme cases, preaching is regarded as “ineffective” and even an “impediment” to “going missional.” This greatly troubled me, especially since I am part of a Reformed tradition that affirms the ministry of Word and Sacrament as a primary means of grace by which the triune God missionizes us and forms us as a missional people. So I set out to explore the relationship between the Ministry of Word and Sacrament and the missio Dei, particularly interested in what kind of preaching cultivates a missional imagination among God’s people. I came to the conclusion that the kind of preaching that does this is that which draws people into the drama of the triune God’s mission, where our lives get re-scripted in Christ and we are transformed and empowered by the Spirit to improvise our parts (“play Christ”) to the glory of God and for the sake of the world. I then set out to identify key characteristics of missonal preaching toward this end.
