A process for enhancing creativity in sermon preparation is developed based upon a prototypical approach to Scripture, associational models of imagination and current creativity theory.  Called the Religious Imagination Spiritual Creativity exercise or RISC, this seven-step process is used by several preachers for sermon preparation and is evaluated by lay persons as to its effects on proclamation. Ten sermons were preached: five were formatted inductively, and five deductively.  Retention of data presented was measured by a ten-question test which was administered immediately following each sermon presented.  Each test consisted of eight true or false and two multiple choice questions.  Statistical t-tests were used to compare the mean score of the inductive and deductive sermon formats. The hypothesis was D plus S would be greater than S (D=drama and S=sermon).  The results of the study (which included well-defined control and experimental groups, and 1,397 individual surveys) lent confirmation to the positive effect of drama as an effective teaching aid. The purpose of this dissertation is to record the degree of effectiveness which word pictures, embedded in inductively formatted sermons, had in the adult Sunday school classes of the Whiteville United Methodist Church.  The thesis of this study is that when a minister utilizes inductive sermon designs in his or her adult Sunday school classes, the majority of all responses will be positive. The end result will be a desire by both the speaker and hearers to make further use of these distinctive inductive formats.  The instrument used as a measuring device is the Boyd Stokes Questionnaire. This form was administered after each sermon was preached, and an overall average response factor was determined from the resultant data. There were two other groups of lay persons that either studied on their own, or did not study at all.  The study extended over an eight week period in an effort to determine how well persons who participated in the groups, who also contributed to the sermon preparation, understood the message and text that was used as the basis for the sermon. Activity centered around: 1) matters relating to Old Testament authority and the adoption of a methodology; 2) a treatment of narrative, poetic and prophetic genres of literature; and 3) two preaching labs. The strategy is comprehensive, divided into three major components: design, implementation procedure, and model for processing the data.  It is illustrated by application to four representative sermons, with extensive data gathered from 211 respondents.
