Ministry leaders are likely to adopt the leadership style of unorthodox mentors if they have no formal theological education. Leaders nor formally trained are less likely to display transformational leadership behaviors. African American leaders were interviewed about higher education in their ministries. They were tested for a full range of leadership behaviors using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. A formal theological studies education was desired but not required by the leaders interviewed. Five key directives of Jesus's leadership were developed and measured: (1) Jesus experienced life with His disciples, (2) Jesus engaged the disciples in their own development, (3) Jesus empowered the disciples with a clear vision, (4) Jesus enlisted the help of the Father for the disciples in prayer, (5) Jesus endured the Cross on the disciples' behalf. The vision for the church is to become a church 'where the meeting with Jesus Christ transforms me, you and the world, and to become a church for ones entire life.' My thesis is founded in the needing for a new role of pastoral leadership for this church. Interviews have been done in nine congregations. The conclusion from the research is the pastor's role is to be a Servant Leader who helps others become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous. This mixed methods study revealed that there is a connection between church leadership development efforts and how the workforce views the leadership as servants.
