Followers of Christ are called to the ministry of diakonia.  Diakonia can be fulfilled in a partnership of the local church and local welfare agencies. In a cooperative effort, the Hall County Department of Family and Children's Services join with lay volunteers who are placed in direct service to parents who physically abuse their children.  Volunteers develop trust relationships to renew self esteem, decrease social isolation and enhance capacity for coping with stress. A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events.  Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service.  Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation.
