The manual consists of an introduction, five chapters including footnotes and discussion starters, two appendices, and a bibliography.Chapter I details the origin, development, and parachurch status of deacons' conferences. Three eras of conference history are described: 1906-1930, 1930-1962, 1962-present.Chapter II is a biblical study of service including an examination of Isaiah's suffering servant texts, Mark 10:45 and its Christological basis for service by each Christian, and a study of four New Testament texts frequently noted as influencing our understanding of service and deacons: Acts 6:1-6, Philippians 1:1, 1 Timothy 3:8-13, and Romans 16:1-2.Chapter III examines the theology of service in the Reformed tradition by considering statements in John Calvin; 16th and 17th century Dutch Reformed Church Orders; the 1978-1979 CRC synodical position on worldhunger, 'And He Had Compassion on Them'; Karl Barth; and The Deacons Handbook.Chapter IV considers similarities and differences in the structures of deacons' conferences by comparing past and present conference constitutions. An appeal is made for greater uniformity for deacons' conferences and a new model constitution is submitted for consideration.Chapter V examines deacons' conference constitutions to discover how people become leaders of conferences and what their responsibilities are. Four circles of leadership are detailed, and uniform titles and job descriptions are suggested. This thesis maintains that ministry in the church should focus on the spiritual formation of the most committed people in the church, called the “Remnant,” rather than on marketing the church to non-members. The concept of the Remnant in this thesis is based on the teaching of Anglican writer Martin Thornton. This thesis argues that the prayer, spiritual growth, and ministries of the Remnant will have a vicarious influence on the larger church and the world; the spiritual growth of the Remnant will naturally lead to increased ministry and mission. In this thesis, the biblical theology of the Remnant is complemented by Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST), which teaches that growth in healthy functioning by an individual in a system will contribute the health of the system. The thesis argues that the biblical theology of the Remnant and BFST are complementary approaches to understanding the relationship of the individual to the group and the impact of the individual on the group. This thesis project studied the result of four years of “pastoral ministry classes” that were aimed at the spiritual formation the Remnant in the church. These classes focused on a cultivating the participant’s lives of prayer and on understanding growth in healthy functioning in terms of BFST. The findings revealed student growth in three goal areas: greater cultural understanding, greater appreciation for life situation, and greater motivation to serve. The project explored biblical foundations and the causes and consequences of families in homeless crisis. It also examined similarities between “service learning” in the public schools and integrative ministry. The examination of the lives of pastors, leaders, and lay leaders defined as servant leaders based on Patterson's doctoral work, helped in the development of an attribute-driven virtue-focused servant leadership development model.
