Married couples at St. Stephen's Church, Sewickley, Pennsylvania, entered in the pre-marriage preparation process shared observations about their generation and their personal expereinces related to co-habitation and sex before marriage. A study of relevant Scripture was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the Bible's witness in the areas of human nature, marriage, sin, lust and sexual immorality. Nevertheless, Christian congregations and their ministers can, through courage and faith, overcome ungodly rationalizations for ungodly sexual beliefs and actions by setting out the godly tenets of sexual righteousness and supporting them with valid Biblical argument. Chapter one introduces the thesis while providing a methodology for implementation and application of Biblical truth related to sexual identity and practice. Chapter two chronicles the decline of sexual morality in western societies and identities the pattern of thought driving cultural change. Chapter three speaks to the evangelical missteps in addressing the sexual revolution and points toward a comprehensive plan of correction. Chapter four seeks to establish a systematic theology of sexual identity and practice while chapter five speaks to guidelines for preaching sensitive material within a congregational setting. The goal of this project is to strengthen marriages through challenging couples to embrace covenant marriage, understand God's design for human sexuality, ascertain spousal emotional needs, and identify destructive behaviors which prevent intimacy. The project will involve enlisting married couples for participation in a thirteen session study entitled God's design for marital intimacy. Each participant will engage in a process whereby he or she comes to a better understanding of one's own self and his or her spouse in order to create marital intimacy. By examining God's word, each participant should gain a better understanding of sex as a glorious gift, meant by its creator to be fully expressed and enjoyed within the proper covenant relationship. The project leader will also present a series of four sermons on famous couples in the Bible. Using quasi-experimental design, 42 high school aged participants formed control and treatment groups. The treatment group participated in a six-week education study on the Bible's teaching on sexuality. Peer leaders were included. Biblical knowledge and sexually permissive attitudes were measured before and after the treatment. Quantitative analysis revealed significant increase in biblical knowledge yet no significant decrease in sexually permissive attitudes.
