The investigator explores this problem as related to the status of women in American culture; Christian (particularly evangelical) culture; the religious landscape in America; church history; evangelical and fundamentalist theology; churches, denominations, and academies; the emerging church movement; seminary recruiting and placement practices; and student debt. The investigator designed and delivered a seminar to female students at two evangelical seminaries to address the problem of ministry placement for women. The intention of the seminars was to inform female students of possible obstacles to employment, encourage them to expand their understanding of their calling, challenge them to be creative in pursuit of ministry opportunities, and warn them to decrease the amount of student debt incurred during seminary."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131189500706816,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:32.740Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:27:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f771a140-200f-459c-8068-2f75677b4cd9","accessControl_ssim":["4554c487-914c-4067-adb8-2483a57ddca0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Don't let them sit in your lap: voices of African-American women called by God to ordained ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:34:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:12:21Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c35f88e4-043a-472b-ab88-5361dd661e02"],"hasLease_ssim":["6b3b9d54-8964-4bab-ab64-2d930b1a9e23"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sam Mann"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Barbara J Morgan"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Sexism in religion","Women clergy","Womanist theology","African American women","Church of God in Christ","Women--Religious aspects--Pentecostal churches","Clergy--Appointment, call, and election","Women"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to give voice and bear witness to the issue of sexism in the Black church, focusing on the Church of God in Christ. This study focuses on the perspectives on women in the church context that devalue women as imperfect and inferior beings in relationship with others. It addresses the problematic situation of gender relations in the Korean church context with a critical analysis, and shows how cultural and social norms concerning women are deeply embedded in the Korean church context. It also reveals how the problematic situation has been reinforced by its association with, and acceptance of, fundamentalist theology. This study draws on transformative learning theory as a way of fashioning a new educational model for Korean women in the church. Even though the educational theory of transformative education has been developed and applied in various educational contexts, it has rarely been discussed in a faith-based context. This project shows how it is possible to utilize transformative education theory in a faith-based context, through a case study with a class at a Bible institute. This study also draws upon narrative pedagogy as a practical principle to create a religious educational model for Korean women in the church context. Theological discussion centered on Minjung theology particularly, with the notion of shin-myung, is important in order to contextualize the narrative framework in the Korean context. As a powerful tool for promoting perspective transformations in the church, reading the sacred story, the Bible, is discussed with feminist and post-colonial perspectives. Integrating these theoretical discussions, the religious education model for Korean women is grounded on the group experiences with Korean women in two different settings, church and school. This model can initiate perspective transformation, not only in the women themselves but also in others. The educational experiences in the women's group provide possibilities and hopes for bringing meaningful changes in Korean women's context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132115963740160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:58:16.284Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:42:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:19:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ca689114-e289-4af7-8264-0e1c545d5aff","accessControl_ssim":["e0087738-3a63-4b0b-8dc7-cf2dd120b6cc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Gender-based rejection and the healing process for African American women in ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:42:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:56:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["233f558f-8d72-4b26-8890-95d46ccd1982"],"hasLease_ssim":["e6836682-372e-4d58-81c5-945f448c35c3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Eugene Robinson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paulette LaVerne Scott"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (Dayton, OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Group therapy","Women clergy","African American women","African American clergy","Sexism in religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The objective of this project is to help African American women who are new in ministry recover from gender-based rejections that they face. The WCC presents lessons designed to amend sexist teachings with corrective love that enables one to care for and support another, but not at the loss of self. The project tests the WCC in a diverse group of black Christian women assembled for five sessions exploring self-development, methods of building healthy bonds with other women, and investigation of sexism in the Scriptures, contemporary literature, and personal lives. The project demonstrated that suffering due to sexist Christian teaching abounds in the lives of black Christian women, and concluded that the WCC should be expanded and taught on an ongoing basis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126611331907584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:30:46.659Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:11:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:47:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b64667fa-b87f-489b-b4bb-daf6c5f4d52e","accessControl_ssim":["58ab783f-92cd-448e-89ea-e1b6bb585308"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The centering point: bridging polarities in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T05:11:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:23:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa56f152-2566-4cce-9003-7553bb375220"],"hasLease_ssim":["f6776e15-487f-44a5-afe3-1151b6ad2e61"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Calvin L Porter"],"year_tesim":["1996"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary Catt Rudy"],"publisher_tesim":["Christian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Sexism in religion","Women clergy","Case studies","Power (Social sciences)","Change--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Sexism is pervasive in society and is manifested in the church--in its extreme form, as violence toward women.
