Based on the belief that all human beings are created in the Image of God, and therefore must be given a full measure of love and dignity, the MoCo Pride Center is a way of reaching out to a community long marginalized by many churches. The intersection of faith and community building is one of the main themes that runs through this project. It also challenges the practice of sending people elsewhere, outside of Montgomery County, for needed services rather than addressing those needs within the county. The motivation for the project grew out of the realization that the Downtown Phoenix Church needed a framework to help them establish and build relationships with the growing gay community in the downtown area. The author used a seven point Likert scale to survey members and friends of EFC. Noteworthy data revealed by experiencing inclusion, hope, with open and affirming encouragement to seek Jesus, the people of EFC reported an increase in their self-image, spiritual maturity and relationship with Christ. During an eight month period (September 2013 - April 2014) I led my congregation in intentional outreach to two specific under-represented populations that we wished to reach - men and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The goal of the project was to reach out to these groups to express our welcome and discover ways to involve them in the life of our congregation. The intent was to live out our belief in welcome and hospitality which Jesus demonstrated through his life and ministry.  A men's fellowship was formed for the duration of the project. They chose to meet monthly for breakfast and conversation as a way to strengthen their bonds and create an opportunity to meet new people. A new church committee, the Open and Affirming (ONA) Action committee, was formed to intentionally reach out to the LGBT population. They created visual displays within the church building, hosted an outreach luncheon, and participated in a regional conference for LGBT youth. Data was collected via an online questionnaire and the study design was mixed methods with an emphasis on the qualitative data. Study sample included 80 students/alumni from 19 Christian colleges/universities. Generally, respondents felt lonely, hid their sexuality and reported a negative campus climate. With so many insisting that one cannot be gay and Christian, we construct a dividing line between what happens on a Saturday night and who we are in a Church on Sunday morning. I do not believe that this is an issue with which only LGBTQ persons struggle. I believe that most Christians struggle to reconcile the messiness of everyday life and their self-representation in Church. Much of this compartmentalization centers around the tension between what is sacred and what is secular.
