A methodology of in-depth interviews with three 'post-anorexic' (physically recovered) women was the foundation of this qualitative study.  A coding table linking shame, female identity, and the mother-daughter relationship allowed for quantification of the data. The results indicated deep shame around female identity, although the anorexia appeared more an effort to break free from a shame-bound self than a symbol of it. Studies and research into the area of shame are reviewed for their relevance to the development of the program.  The program included provision for participants to complete pre- and post- self-evaluation Internalized Shame Scale (ISS) questionnaires.  Comparison of the pretest and posttest scores revealed a significant change in the way the group members perceived themselves.
