The project focused on the identification, adaptation, utilization and analysis of common spiritual direction methods to facilitate healing and restoration in the life of urban African American women of varying ages and backgrounds who had experienced a crisis that impacted their spirituality. Using a qualitative case study methodology, the participants attended a 13-week program that utilized a variety of spiritual direction methods and learning tools. The project helped the participants re-shape their theology, re-interpret scripture, and re-image God. Healing was initiated through release of shame, forgiveness, empowerment, and reawakened spirituality. Human disobedience disrupts God's intent and introduces shame, fear and vulnerability into the human condition. Though we try, humankind cannot restore what is lost due to disobedience. We cannot cover our nakedness and shame. Only God's mercy can adequately respond to our need. God covers our shame. Through baptism, prayer, vocation and resurrection we share in the glory of Christ. He used three shame reduction techniques -- psychoeducation, self-affirmation, and affirmation by others -- during a twelve-week study of 9 males participating in a church-based, Christ-centered Twelve-Step program.  The Internalized Shame Scale measured a statistically significant reduction of shame levels, but the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3 did not.  The Sexuality Survey did not measure a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of sexually addictive behavior.
