The patient's stories and experiences are valuable resource materials that can be utilized in the preparation and delivery of more effective homilies to the hospital community. In most churches, Sunday homilies do not effectively address the problems of the sick. Most Sunday homilies address the moral, social, economic, and political problems of the healthy members of the churches. This thesis is aimed at improving pastoral care ministry of the sick. This pastoral approach will provide a homiletical guide for preachers, pastors, and chaplains involved in hospital, hospice, and nursing home ministries. In order to test whether the integration of patients' stories in sermons makes a difference in how preaching is received by patients in a hospital setting, three homilies without patients' stories and three with patients' stories were preached to patients. The method of testing was with questionnaires designed to provide opportunities to patients to express how they felt about the homilies. Apart from using questionnaires, face-to-face conversations between the pastoral minister and patients were also provided. The responses of patients clearly indicated the importance of including patients' stories and experiences in hospital preaching and affirmed the author's observation that applying patients' stories and experiences in homilies make preaching to the hospital community more effective."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130215406108672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:28:03.772Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:49:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:52:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6fcafe71-ba86-4c9e-8d2d-81ac057a7476","accessControl_ssim":["1e0ae688-6df1-4e52-a72e-1250e4e3f5f9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nursing in the Spirit"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:49:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:24:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9fd97db7-0bc4-422a-80d0-bbdbe9a602ad"],"hasLease_ssim":["a4b42685-98c1-44b0-b998-aad5bdc8c050"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce G Epperly"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. She urges educators to include a historical perspective of who nurses have been throughout the history of the Christian church, encourage spiritual self-exploration and training in their students, and reclaim the work of the forerunner of spiritual care in nursing, Florence Nightingale. The findings of this exploratory study suggest numerous actions which are helpful or harmful in reducing the severity and enhancing the effective management of a faith crisis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715395928588288,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:45:49.937Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:21:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d568cc8f-4138-4b4d-a6ce-476f2b9f54d6","accessControl_ssim":["c791d218-4fdd-4f4f-b996-b0e9a3e7a0af"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cross roads: a faith based support group to supplement medical treatments for pain management for patients with sickle cell disease"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:13:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a99e6a9d-94c8-4015-93c2-743a626226d4"],"hasLease_ssim":["1cacb67d-413a-4144-9a18-7e6646623867"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gale Poindexter","Urias H Beverly"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Estee M McClendon"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Health","Sick--Religious life","Worship--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The objective was to determine the effects of religious worship on pain levels in persons with sickle cell disease. Insight was gained into the way patients viewed their health problem and prepared for entering the hospital for surgery. The impact of surgery, the effect of anesthetic, and complications in the healing process were explored. Patients saw their surgery not just as an isolated event, but as part of their life experience. Most interesting are the ways in which patients compensate for the troubling, frightening, and chaotic aspects of their experience, reminding us that, above all, this is a human experience involving love, care, laughter, sensitivity, hope, being there, trust, calming, sharing the suffering and connecting with what we believe in beyond ourselves."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721729470234624,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:26:30.074Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":7,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
