Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. How does a disabled working-class woman find her voice to become a preacher in a mainline Protestant denomination?  Does she have something new to say to a congregation?  How does her particular preaching style interface with a small, rural congregation in the midst of change?  Using liberation theology, new homiletic theories and autobiography, this paper will explore some of the complexities of preacher formation. First Baptist Church of Warsaw, IN developed a Diagnostic Test to diagnose specific needs.  Using this information the church developed a two-year program, evaluated it with a follow-up questionnaire, verifying the program had met specific needs.
