Innovations that may increase effectiveness may be planned and implemented when small task groups are empowered to lead these processes.  Nine church leaders concentrated on assimilation of prospective members.  At the end of one year, evaluation revealed that 49.3 percent of first-time visitors to the church had assimilated to the point that they identified the church as their church of attendance or belonging. The project was necessary because of both space and financial restrictions.  A task group was trained with a leadership training manual written by the author.  Participants in the training program were then enlisted to lead new adult small groups.  The project resulted in the establishment of several new groups. The participants engaged in three foci designed to develop their spirituality: personal spiritual disciplines, individual spiritual direction with the project director, and a weekly meeting that included group spiritual direction.  The weekly meetings also introduced the students to alternative spiritual exercises which the project director encouraged the participants to practice. Action research utilizing an experimental and a control group tested the proposal that reciprocal self-disclosure acts as a catalyst in facilitating intimacy and individuality.  Pre- and posttests employed the Group Environment Scale and the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale.  Based on a significance level of .05, the experimental group revealed a significant increase in self-disclosure.  The control group did not. Neither group demonstrated significant statistical changes in intimacy and individuality. Experiments in various countries have shown that group styles of ministry are successful with children.
