It is based on a practical application of the intersection between ethics and religious education. Research included information on the purpose, resources and programs of interfaith web sites and local interfaith groups. A review of interfaith literature on peacemaking, ethics, community and religious education was supplemented with interviews with specialists in these areas including scholars, spiritual leaders and religious educators. A model for an interfaith program is presented, as well as resources for faith communities who seek to implement the model. The model is a one-year program for two faith communities and includes religious education, fellowship/worship, and social justice action components."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131772873867264,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:49.089Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:18:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ed281e68-009a-47f3-a312-523bc846d9b3","accessControl_ssim":["a370e9ed-8ee3-4046-9dbf-1df51ef59017"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church and society: a model to build bridges using charity, justice and advocacy to create an effective church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:18:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:54:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["670a2609-864b-4ddc-864d-b28bbf5c8b50"],"hasLease_ssim":["43f1987c-013f-4e81-ab05-88b9ed3fdc52"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Oscar L Varnadoe"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["King, Martin Luther, Jr, 1929-1968","Clergy","Clergy--Office","Jackson, David Hilton","Social action","Social role"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project seeks to develop ministry models that bridge the social justice mission of public institutions with the theological vision of the church. The model is designed to engage church in society in ways which create a more effective church. Through qualitative research and considering the ministries of two illustrious, great African-American preachers, the dissertation demonstrates that congregational involvement in society increases church effectiveness, regardless of whether the style of ministry is priestly, as with Dr. J.H. The author presented a project that provides one way to link the works of mercy to a congregation's understanding of its Christian identity and practice. The research is centered around preparation and analysis of a series of four sermons on social justice. An attempt was made to demonstrate to the congregation that social justice is a central theme running throughout the whole Bible. Particular emphasis is placed on the preaching of the prophets and Jesus' ministry of preaching and teaching. A cross-section of the researcher's congregation was asked questions before the sermon series began, after each of the four social justice sermons, and after the whole series had been completed. There was a discernible difference in the audience's opinions on why people are poor and in the audience's intention to change structural injustice. In addition, there was an increase in the respondents' ability to identify biblical texts that address social justice and an increase in their ability to apply biblical social justice to local, national, and global issues. The project showed discernable differences in attitudes about social justice and willingness to work for social justice after the series of sermons."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131888770875392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:39.617Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:47:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:57:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"166353ed-42b7-4891-9d39-2c0964683cd8","accessControl_ssim":["d52aab5c-7c41-4079-98fe-7590fe5a4c1d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Social holiness: experiments in prayer and other subversive acts in the local church and community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:47:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:46:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["872646d3-dc9f-4051-966e-31133713a713"],"hasLease_ssim":["4646e08e-5c31-4e82-8371-a6f71505e7f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Logan"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The qualitative proactive research method will be used in this project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129012999815168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:08:57.068Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:36:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:03:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"84ce46f6-9319-431c-8306-3364b37e05d2","accessControl_ssim":["1c621585-b586-44f9-9df4-14b1936ebfa1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a ministry plan for the men at Union Gospel Mission of Dallas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:36:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:02:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b55fff89-d7db-4253-9f72-3ba24ae65d24"],"hasLease_ssim":["722fa323-655a-4ef0-ac2f-1846a17ab900"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William Caldwell"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kwabena C Asante-Mensah"],"publisher_tesim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Homelessness","Union Gospel Mission (Dallas, Tex)","Church work with people experiencing homelessness","Social action"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In contemporary times, psychologists, politicians, and theologians have wrestled with the problem of homelessness.
