The scope of this research was limited to the African-American church plants of the SCSBC in the last decade. Considering that many churches are declining or have plateaued, this study sought to discover practical, effective strategies and techniques that have contributed to overall church growth by baptism and conversion. The author asked what these practices were, how they were taught, and how they were modeled by the leadership. The author's research preceding the case study gives a review and foundation from the early church's teaching and experience in evangelism, discipleship, missions, pastoral leadership, and church growth to the present. A closer look was given at the causes and effects of little to no obedience and commitment to the Great Commission. Chapter 3 investigates lay and bivocational leaders in America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and their effectiveness. Chapter 4 presents historical data demonstrating the evangelistic effectiveness of bivocational leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention. First, the project director researched critical mission issues and skills for cross-cultural ministry in order to develop a tool to train youth for ministering cross-culturally overseas. Second, the director developed a teaching module for selected Southern baptist leaders in Texas to use to train youth for ministry in cross-cultural setting. Last, the director equipped selected Southern baptist leaders in Texas with the teaching module to train youth in ministering cross-culturally. These selected leaders along with the youth participants provided assessment and evaluation regarding the effectiveness and usefulness of the training module. In addition to the ministry goals, the project director pursued two professional goals. The first professional goal was to increase knowledge in cross-cultural ministry for the purpose of developing a tool for training youth. This desire to encourage first-time pastors is the heart of this dissertation's work. The dissertation is an attempt to provide assistance to first-time pastors in order to possibly prevent what happened to the writer from happening to them. First-time pastors encounter ministry challenges. these ministerial challenges can be overcome through encouragement received in relationships with seasoned mentors such as directors of missions. The project involved a four-day leadership training retreat followed by a semester of mentoring student team leaders. Team leaders were given training in Personal Style inventory, DISC inventory, Spiritual Gifts inventory, use of spiritual disciplines, team building, mentoring, discipleship levels, and reproducing disciples. Congregational health demonstrated by longer tenures of church leaders and conflict with less intensity and better resolution has occurred as leaders understand and apply systems thinking, recognize the problems and issues in systems, and remain differentiated in difficult situations. The project accomplished these goals.
