It is based on the thesis that, through a proper understanding of spiritual guidance, the Lutheran pastor can be greatly helped in guiding individuals in their spiritual journey and formation. Spiritual guidance is presented wtihin the context of contemporary spirituality, showing how it differs from pastoral counseling. Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed.  Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same.  Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension.  Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment.  The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones.  Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines. A case is made for expanded use of group spiritual direction substantiated by the results of questionnaires completed by participants in parish groups. A complex statistical study involving the chi square was used to determine the accuracy of the thesis.  A testing procedure employing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Spiritual Orientation Profile was administered to 100 lay people and 100 clergy persons and the personalities and prayer lives were examined. In the process of this growth, a change takes place in the person's image of God.  The methodology incorporated a modified case study in which a six-item questionnaire and follow-up interview were used with selected subjects.  The population selected for sampling consisted of sixty women who had the experience of spiritual direction for at least one year.  From these sixty subjects, four were chosen for a face-to-face taped interview.  Portions of each interview are incorporated in the study.
