'The wheel of spiritual experience,' based on the spirituality typology proposed by Urban T Holmes in his book, A History of Christian Spirituality, was developed and tested.  Results show that the instrument is helpful in three ways. The participants engaged in three foci designed to develop their spirituality: personal spiritual disciplines, individual spiritual direction with the project director, and a weekly meeting that included group spiritual direction.  The weekly meetings also introduced the students to alternative spiritual exercises which the project director encouraged the participants to practice. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience.  This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience.  Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition.  Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth.  The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship.  Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. Work with the spiritual director, the personal reflection time each day, the forming of the sermon, and the evaluation by a parish advisory committee were recorded in a daily journal.  The author read to inform himself of spiritual direction and how present-day Christian scholars understand the role of spiritual direction.  The result of the study is that the author has made a change in his sermon preparation. Criteria for inclusion in the study were that Ignatian spiritual directors: 1) be presently engaged in the practice of spiritual direction; 2) had personally experienced a Spiritual Exercise retreat; and 3) practiced the Ignatian method of spiritual direction. A semi-structured interview was conducted with each director. The data indicated that spiritual directors understood what resistance was but were less able to articulate how they handled resistance to change exhibited by directees. As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson.  The integrated model consists of characteristics and role of a guide, and subject matter of guide/seeker
