The metaphor of Christian pilgrimage as a biblical and historical model complements this ascetic spirituality. The project combines theoretical study of biblical, historical, and theological concepts of pilgrimage with an actual pilgrimage.  Questionnaires and journal reflections of partipants relate the project to contemporary practice of spiritual direction. The Soul Friend Model calls each participant to a three-month commitment to be paired with another person who seeks to learn discipleship. The model hopes to move a person from a surface, casual commitment to a discipling relationship within the local church.  The project accomplished growth in specific areas of devotional life, Christian relationships, evangelism, and ministry through the local church.
