What, indeed, is God doing with us, day by day, and year by year? And how can we more fully cooperate? These questions are offered as a means of introduction to a study which at its core is lifting up the stories of clergy. The passion the co-researchers bring to their ministries, and their growth in love of self, others and God across the twists and turns of their spiritual journeys, is inspiring, and has much for the reader to consider and reflect upon for one’s own life. Chapter 2 and 3 explore the conceptual framework surrounding this study. Attention is given to both theological and theoretical ways of thinking about what can be learned from the clergypersons’ stories. Chapter 4 outlines the core procedures used in phenomenological analysis and gives specific information regarding such matters as recruitment of co-researchers, documentation provided and the structure of the interview process. In Chapter 5 the co-researchers are introduced and resultant themes and structures of the experience of spiritual journey are discussed. Examples from the co-researcher’s stories are provided. In Chapter 6 a summary of the research findings is provided, and hypotheses are reviewed. Could it be that some church members were giftless and therefore incapable of rendering spiritual service? Did some members possess more than one spiritual gift while others possessed none? Would participants who could not identify their spiritual gifts at the outset of a learning experience be able to identify them afterwards? What should the nature and outline of such a course of study be? To what extent should the biblical materials on spiritual gifts be covered? Are there any indicators from one’s personality that might help him or her discern spiritual gifts? How important are they in the lift of the church? And how do they relate to the fruit of the Holy Spirit and direct commands of scripture? These questions and others prompted the author to design a course focused on the spiritual discernment process. The author purposed to teach the biblical materials on the subject, to present lists of characteristics describing each of the gifts, to administer tests to evaluate the participant's knowledge of spiritual gifts of others in the group, and to offer spiritual passages as a guide to personal development leading to The project was implemented with a group of selected leaders from the Thomas County Baptist Association, Inc., all from different churches. The group composition was four pastors, two laymen, and two laywomen. The equipping consisted of six sessions conducted over eight hours in a one-day workshop. This research, by placing culture in context, seeks to understand the practices, spiritual and otherwise, of Black women leaders. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis from a womanist lens, the Black woman leader is invited to make sense of her own experience providing new possibilities for engagement by Spiritual Directors and faith communities. It arose from the author’s reflection on her own spiritual journey, from her professional experience as a psychotherapist, and from the observation that psychological barriers often impede spiritual progress. While the psychotherapeutic and spirituality literature often exist in separate silos, and the two professions tend to operate in different domains, the author contends that spiritual formation/direction and psychotherapy in combination are often what is needed to bring about Christlikeness. A psychospiritual model of Christian formation is presented that integrates insights from both domains with particular attention to the rich spiritual traditions of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic understandings of psychological wholeness and spiritual holiness. To test this integrated model, a field research project was carried out to explore the effect of an integrated, eight-session psychoeducational program with individuals whose spiritual lives were affected by trauma and unforgiveness. The findings of the study suggest that attachment theory and trauma-informed principles may help people move forward in the process of forgiveness and spiritual growth. How do we communicate with God? How do we know what He is saying? Through the process of writing her spiritual autobiography during the COVID-19 pandemic, the researcher discovered that communication with God occurs when people 1) intentionally take time to listen to God, and 2) use the disruption of life as an occasion to contemplate their relationship with Him. Researching models of spiritual formation and looking at patterns in literature resulted in the creation of a five-part spiritual formation model of change. This model proposes that the ability to listen to God is a key aspect of spiritual formation. An action learning research project conducted with soldiers of The Salvation Army revealed that meeting biweekly one-on-one with a spiritual director to learn and engage in spiritual practices had a positive effect on the participants’ ability to listen to God.
