Criteria for inclusion in the study were that Ignatian spiritual directors: 1) be presently engaged in the practice of spiritual direction; 2) had personally experienced a Spiritual Exercise retreat; and 3) practiced the Ignatian method of spiritual direction. A semi-structured interview was conducted with each director. The data indicated that spiritual directors understood what resistance was but were less able to articulate how they handled resistance to change exhibited by directees. The theological/biblical background focused on biblical stories, incarnational presence, personal narrative, human sexuality, prayer, creation-centered spirituality, and process, liberation, and feminist theologies.  As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson. There follows a study of four modern women writers in the field of spiritual direction: Evelyn Underhill, Dorothee Soelle, Sandra Schneiders, and Carolyn Gratton.  The insights of all of these writers are evaluated, sifted and combined to form the basis of a workshop on spiritual direction presented twice to groups of apporximately 100 women from the denomination in a weekend retreat setting. As the spiritual direction coincides with individualism, there exists the potential for a profound conversion experience.  The method of research was the use of case study material from four spiritual directees.  There was a convergence of material from interpersonal relationships, relationship with God, and Jungian insights into the interior life.  The Jungian material included use of symbols, dreams, typology, journal keeping, active imagination, and rituals.
