In group spiritual direction a group leader enables participants to provide spiritual guidance and care for one another. The project coaches group members in using cognitive therapy--a preferred treatment for depressed persons in which change is accomplished through adult learning--to address spiritual needs of the member whose difficulties are the focus of any given session. The project facilitates a model of adult learning, known as Transformative Learning, through practice of reflection. Three study classes enlist 14 participants--seven from AA and seven 'average church attendees'--in a seven-week survey of the Beatitudes. In a Reformed understanding the relation between daily prayer and the Lord's Day service is strengthened by the biblical invitation to pray without ceasing; by the Lord's Prayer, which demonstrates that private prayers are never merely individual; and by a relationship with Jesus through his resurrection.
