Questionnaires and journal reflections of partipants relate the project to contemporary practice of spiritual direction. The Soul Friend Model calls each participant to a three-month commitment to be paired with another person who seeks to learn discipleship. The model hopes to move a person from a surface, casual commitment to a discipling relationship within the local church.  The project accomplished growth in specific areas of devotional life, Christian relationships, evangelism, and ministry through the local church. In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim. This study provides theories of interpretation and knowing for spiritual directors.  The unconscious is variously understood to impede knowledge, to provide the building blocks for all knowledge and to constitute the essential prerequisites for religious knowledge and experience.  Models are used to organize diverse theories. Catholic theological structure, defined by the magesterium, is used because of theological conviction and the opinion that religious knowledge requires interface between personal structures with superordinate structures. 'The wheel of spiritual experience,' based on the spirituality typology proposed by Urban T Holmes in his book, A History of Christian Spirituality, was developed and tested.  Results show that the instrument is helpful in three ways. The participants engaged in three foci designed to develop their spirituality: personal spiritual disciplines, individual spiritual direction with the project director, and a weekly meeting that included group spiritual direction.  The weekly meetings also introduced the students to alternative spiritual exercises which the project director encouraged the participants to practice. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience.  This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience.  Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition.  Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth.  The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship.  Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. The author read to inform himself of spiritual direction and how present-day Christian scholars understand the role of spiritual direction.  The result of the study is that the author has made a change in his sermon preparation.
