The curriculum for the weekend highlighted the practice of the devotional leaders of the church who are pioneers in spiritual formation. The project director used multiple methods to train these teenagers in the disciplines. During the eight sessions of the equipping retreat, the teenagers experienced spiritual disciplines. The methods employed multi-sensory learning techniques in the context of spiritual disciplines. The project measured affective changes in participants based on new spiritual discipline practices. In this mentoring paradigm the responsibility for the learning experience is shared as a means to deepen the spiritual lives of college students and utilize the influence of each mentor. The project was structured around training sessions, weekly meetings, and follow-up sessions. Their parents seem unaware of this fact, possibly because they share this quality. This study seeks to discover ways to initiate steps for intentional spiritual formation for families in small churches. By conducting a qualitative study of the self-reported beliefs and behavior concerning personal responsibility for child spiritual formation among specific parents in his church and in six additional churches, the author discovered a disconnect between their behavior and beliefs. Methods of formation and application include using inventories and assessments; exploring resources, studies, and guides to practices in retreat settings; weekly communication (including journal entries) between participants and peer mentor; committing to Sabbath-keeping, developing a Rule of Life, and formulating a strategy for investing in the lives of student leaders. The thesis describes a biblical and theological basis for this presupposition.  It then presents a program undertaken to help seminarians focus on their spiritual formation for ministry, and presents an evaluation of that program based on feedback from the participants. Because the emphasis of their education and practice is on the needs of their patients and families, these students often have little time to reflect on the profound theological questions that suffering evokes.  This project addresses the concern that in the process of dealing with profound suffering in their patients, nursing students do not receive adequate support for their own spiritual formation.  Using phenomenological methodology, eleven senior baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed about their experiences with patients who were suffering.  The results of the interviews were analyzed, and four themes emerged: the importance of preparation, the need to acknowledge the reality of the situation, the significance of obtaining support, and the necessity of self care.
