The study examines perceptions of 15 adults who participated in a 10-week course utilizing two spiritual disciplines, meditation and journal keeping, and describes the perceptions and feelings of a core group of participants toward two spiritual disciplines and their influence on perceptions of spiritual growth, using a qualitative paradigm and an experimental study.  Based on a standardized, open-ended interview guide the project conducts pre-test and post-test interviews and written assignments. In a 12-week experience, group participants practice personal devotions, meditation, and journaling.  The project follows participants' spiritual journeys and expresses them in their words, revealing qualities and skills necessary for an initiator, as well as some hurdles and concerns.  The project makes no claim that group spiritual guidance is the only way to draw closer to God, but with minimal education for the initiator such groups can be incorporated into churches. The practice of confirmation in a local church provided the setting for the project, conducted over a 13-week period with persons between adolescence and adulthood. Inner healing, healthy sexuality, and spiritual growth require that men resolve inner conflicts resulting from fear of intimacy and mutuality in relationships, anger and abuse of power and persons, and contemporary male role expectations.  This project proposes that the local church should be the primary setting for this work in the lives of men of faith. Research of current literature and resources identified critical issues for male sexuality and masculine spirituality.  Workshop sessions addressed several of these issues in three local church retreats for men. A model of spiritual transformation is developed from the work of Loder, Sobrino, and others.  Following a praxis-theory-praxis approach, it begins with a selection of metaphors taken from source material in the author's religious congregation, the Passionists.  The project subjects these metaphors to careful scrutiny with the aid of symbolic anthropology (following the work of James Hernandez) and hermeneutic philosophy (following the work of Paul Ricoeur). Forty-six members of North Boston Korean United Methodist Church in Andover, Massachusetts, participated in this project from March 1993 to December 1994.
