Expository preaching, interviews, and personal improvement plans form the basis of analysis of the focus group member's prayer lives in the areas of personal prayer life, family prayer life, and corporate prayer life. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to the overall thesis of the project for the church. Special attention is given to contextual an demographic composition of the church along with the goals of the project. Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological foundation for approaching the project. Selections from the Old and New Testaments serve as examples for various kinds of prayer in the Bible. The theological section examines the role that prayer played in the lives of Calvin and Wesley. Chapter 3 examines the pragmatic or experiential role that prayer has played in the lives of historical and contemporary people of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Chapter 4 explains the process used in implementing this project. Attention was given to sermon summaries, pre and post sermon series questionnaires, and the purpose of the personal improvement plan. Chapter 5 focuses on analysis and evaluation of data gathered from the research instruments. Statistical analysis and chart representations are used to understand the results gathered before and after the project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["55f1694e-f3f1-43ea-8ca9-da9a2899defe"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127814678773760,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:49:54.260Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"99006137-74d9-473f-b4b6-f8d35dad8aed","accessControl_ssim":["d18ad1aa-d509-4289-82dc-f3c0a0c40d77"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Dancing with change: a spiritual response to changes in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:00:27Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:36:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["143534dc-ce42-4cdf-b003-52a1a83e101f"],"hasLease_ssim":["84d62cf1-bcf5-4426-b70f-c74e829ba497"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["William R Herzog"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard J McCorry"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church--Diocese of Rochester (NY)","Spiritual life--Christianity","Change--Religious aspects","Catholic Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Generally speaking most people have difficulty with change that they have not had a hand in brining about. This paper explores the topic of change, in light of the many changes occurring today in the Roman Catholic Church. Drawing upon scripture, church history, contemporary secular change management literature, spirituality (especially spirituality employed in the past during times of change), and certain theologies, this paper charts one spiritual path people can follow during times of change in the church. It begins with an exploration of the process of change in general. What are the reasons people resist change, especially changes in the church? What are some of the emotions we can expect to feel as we are going through change? Do these emotions hold up to the light of scrutiny? Sometimes when we examine our feeling in light of reality we find that the feelings are baseless or have a basis in something other than the immediate change to which we are trying to adapt. Change within a religious context is explored, and some theological approaches to change are considered. Finally, the author describes a unique spiritual approach to change which has been successfully offered as reflection sessions during the years 2001-2003 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, NY. These reflections are entitled 'The LEAP of Faith,' with LEAP being an acronym representing four essential components of this particular approach: Learning, Experience, Action, and Prayer. Participants in these reflection sessions have included professional Diocesan and parish staffs, volunteers, clergy, professed religious and parishioners. The overwhelming majority of participants, across all categories, have reflected favorably upon this unique spiritual approach to change."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128040232714240,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:53:29.364Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:58:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c740620-669a-4be2-b033-1341f2ffaedc","accessControl_ssim":["6e4ec8a4-e059-4bd1-823d-9643af10598c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reflections on the spiritual intimacy of the pastor using the beloved disciple as model"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:58:34Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:14:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2d05c1a6-4eea-4b9a-b4ef-103b0a1e0319"],"hasLease_ssim":["ddc4ff57-6944-430d-8b9e-2d53892c6ee0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey C Garner"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Religious life","Spiritual life--Christianity","Beloved Disciple"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study concerns itself with the spiritual intimacy of the pastor. There is a problem in the personal lives of contemporary ministers, which surfaces in the forms of addiction, burnout, infidelity, and such. At the root of the problem is a need for spiritual intimacy. This need merits an investigation and reflection on spiritual intimacy: definition of, challenges to, and a model for. The thesis of this study is that the beloved disciple is an appropriate model for the spiritual intimacy of pastors. The project tested the validity and application of the thesis through selected interviews of pastors. The method of research consisted of investigating the epithet the beloved disciple and the pericopes outlining his mentions in the text. In addition, other literary sources were consulted to determine the dynamics of Christian spirituality and the psychology of intimacy. The project engaged fifteen pastors--seven active and eight inactive--in a spiritual intimacy interview. The project probed the realities of the spiritually intimate life, through a juxtaposition of these ministers and the beloved disciple's spiritual intimacy model."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131606688202752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:10.601Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:56:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:56:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ad1b6eba-ccf6-41b6-8a44-ef83b13b2b6c","accessControl_ssim":["48e679da-cc81-4e50-8fb6-d2a42ef85d70"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Whole like Jesus: a spiritual growth model"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:56:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:07:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a5e1e90e-7022-4663-82dd-e903aa0feae6"],"hasLease_ssim":["48381932-8bfa-42de-9d39-154a28ba4074"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Raymond F Pendleton"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Peter Jeremy Balentine"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis attempts to define Christian maturity. It is written from the perspective of a local church pastor who addresses the struggle of making Christian maturity the goal of ministry. It is based on the writings of the Apostle Paul, who considered the maturity of Christians the test of the quality of his ministry. The primary question for a pastor is: How will Christians develop toward spiritual maturity? Four erroneous assumptions are addressed that can prevent growth to completion after conversion. A spiritual theology of maturity is built on a study of Paul's use fo the term teleios. Its etymology and usage are summarized to create a biblical theology of spiritual maturity. Then it is interpreted through the lens of systems theory, which emphasizes the interrelationships and interactions in the processes of growth. A literature review adds a broader perspective of Pauline categories for growth and maturity in Christ. Thus, a holistic view is offered which formulates the content and contexts necessary for development to maturity. The thesis material is then reformatted in a manual that is useful for laypeople. The series of lessons are formatted to provide an overview of Paul's view of maturity, while taking the persons through the processes of growth in Christ. It seeks to provide material that will develop persons in Christlikeness."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131268207869952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:47.802Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:54:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9ec4fead-02e0-40d2-b385-f13baa64353e","accessControl_ssim":["0347f795-1a49-4b84-88dd-e25fe68f5a14"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing a healthy prayer life"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:46:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["687da3b3-37e9-4bb4-8b22-5c68f36ccf94"],"hasLease_ssim":["ae9aeb7c-90f0-4931-8c9b-0995ab7828af"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard F Lovelace"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Casiday H Warren"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Prayer--Psychology","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Most Christians have received little training in the art of prayer. Healthy prayer is a balance between self-focused and God-focused prayers. This thesis demonstrates through its various constituent prayer projects that healthy prayer can be taught to Christians through a variety of structured prayer programs that included an accountability component as well as structured learning opportunities. Furthermore, this thesis confirms that growth towards a healthy prayer life is measurable. This thesis proposes that Christians who attempt to adopt the healthy prayer life model into their prayer lives will grow spiritually and can become instruments of change within their church and the kingdom of God because their prayers are being directed by the Holy Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131858059132928,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:10.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:52:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:51:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0990e25c-6211-4558-937d-9c7bd8b944e3","accessControl_ssim":["31d878fc-60fc-4af6-9f26-5fb4e593df13"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["How do we become like Christ? Spirituality is here defined as one's personal relationship to God. Jesus makes this very clear in his teachings in the New Testament. In chapters 5, 6, and 7 in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shows how to live a personal spiritual life that affects the individual and the world. Christian leaders focus too often on programs and statements at the general level while trying to improve the ministry of the church, but goal setting and programs alone do not improve ministry if they do not reach individuals and set their hearts afire for the ministry they are called to do. The early church in the book of Acts attests to the importance of one's spirituality (Acts 2:42). The early church fathers and church reformers were deeply aware that if spirituality is to be found within the church it needs first to be found in the hearts of individuals who are responsible for ministry (Wesley, 'Wesley's Use' 63). Wesley particularly emphasized the importance of spirituality in the life of lay ministers. United Methodist ministry today and leadership of the local church are based on laity and clergy cooperation. United Methodist annual conferences and districts provide continuing education for clergy. One of the most important goals for district superintendents is to take care of the spiritual formation training for their pastors. Little spiritual training, however, is offered for local lay leaders, especially for those serving in small membership churches. This dissertation defends the view that spiritual formation instruction for lay leaders, based on a Wesleyan model, makes a difference. The Bible, prayer, Holy Communion, Christian conferencing, and fasting are still basics for personal spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134140750364672,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:27.271Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":283,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
