It is then possible to choose which philosophical assumptions of secular personality theories and counseling methods are compatible with a Christian worldview and which are to be rejected by the discerning Christian counselor. Using attachment theory, grief studies, and family theory, the project views divorce, single parenthood, and remarriage as a process of mourning and recovery.  Divorce both necessitates and interferes with the usual mourning process.  Unfinished mourning alters expectations about remarriage and potentially hinders the formation of stepfamilies.  Interviews with remarried couples and case material from the author's counseling experience illustrate the theory. Three families are interviewed and described.  The units interviewed consist of a remarried couple, former spouse and their spouse, and the children involved.  The themes that emerge are presented and possible areas for additional research are defined.
