By skimming over this common experience of the human condition, they devalue the redemptive meaning and significance of the death and resurrection of Christ. In contrast, Holy Scripture -- and its central figure, Jesus -- never avoids the subject. The author of this thesis proposes a biblical and theological view of suffering, contending that preachers should not avoid the all-pervasiveness of this human condition, but rather assume its presence in their audience. In doing so, they can more faithfully preach the redemptive death of Jesus himself. Included in this work is a book proposal and outline for an ensuing/consequent book, Preaching Christ with our eyes open: proclamation through an apologetic of suffering. The author investigated relevant historic and current literature and drew on his own experience and the experience of other preachers through primary research. The book proposal and outline was sent to preaching ministers. Their responses are included."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131114337730560,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:21.059Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:47:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:09:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a9fc313e-8155-40a4-bfd1-6a28ea12d8c8","accessControl_ssim":["cf91e7c5-9ef1-4adb-a704-aa52c778e31b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Seven steps to healing: experiential reframing and its connections to Job and Jeremiah"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:47:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:02:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["11f5cb5d-f69a-465b-a456-42585b64449a"],"hasLease_ssim":["05b87473-3d96-4e03-9c53-aa79b123f814"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kathleen M O'Connor"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Debra von Samuelson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Suffering--Biblical teaching","Bible. The themes throughout this paper are suffering, death, salvation, redemption, and resurrection. These are followed historically in the Old and New Testaments. Suffering in the OT is thought of variously as a punishment by God, an an educative process, as suffering caused by evil, etc. In the NT these views of suffering are modified in the light of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection. Resurrection to life in the spirit completes the victory over suffering, sin, and death. The third and fourth chapters deal with these themes from a psychological perspective using the ideas of Jung and Frankl. Frankl's emphasis is the importance of finding meaning in suffering; Jung emphasizes the creative use of suffering. Chapter five is a theological perspective on the pain of God and our human dilemma. Shared suffering is important, and God shares our suffering. In the final chapter I have integrated suffering, death, and resurrection into my ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133510973521920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:20:26.670Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:50:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:01:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e7de0df0-d65c-45e4-8041-2437d9b5818f","accessControl_ssim":["dcf9b35b-301f-42d6-ab54-d0efdc38e1b9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["From hopelessness to trust: an eight-week adult bible study on the Book of Job"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:50:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:45:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["09ac8e99-445e-4a6e-a3ef-c032f456efa1"],"hasLease_ssim":["69de978e-dd13-4228-98ac-21f56498a06a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["Harrell F Beck"],"year_tesim":["1983"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stephen T Melius"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Trust in God","Suffering--Biblical teaching","Bible.
