The research concluded congregants feel the church offers support during periods of suffer; however, a longing for the engagement in intimate discussions on the topic of suffering and spiritual well-being is evident. The project design included the administration of pre-test and post-test questionnaires and the completion of weekly spiritual assignments. The results using the formational curriculum revealed that the participants were able to identify the presence of grief and process through their emotions and loss. This project will be based on the ministry skill enhancement model. The project director will begin by researching the field of apologetics and create an annotated bibliography from resources researched to aid in the design and delivery of apologetic sermons. He also will create a report identifying theological doctrines related to evil and suffering that will serve as essential components necessary to increase understanding of evil and suffering. The project director then will develop a series of apologetic sermons incorporating the essential components identified. He will base each sermon on apologetic principles and will incorporate a specific component deemed necessary for the increasing of congregational understanding of evil and suffering. The project director will preach the series of apologetic sermons at Eastwood Baptist Church. The first part looks at how mentoring and personal prayer practices influenced my personal spiritual journey. The second part provides practical enhancements to an existing model of spiritual formation and discusses the place of small groups, suffering, mentoring, and personal spiritual practices in that enhanced model. Finally, in the third part I review a ministry project where I mentored seven individuals in their personal prayer lives over a seven-week period. The research focuses on eight passages in 1-2 Corinthians where Paul speaks of his own suffering, determining how he suffered and how he responded to that suffering. Paul's responses are developed into 6 attitudes and 3 actions as the Christian's response to suffering. It will also provide the training needed to direct the sufferer to accept the unexpected direction their life has taken and find God's purpose for their situation. I have used an Archival Educational Methodology including many interviews with physicians treating chronic pain and with patients experiencing long-term chronic pain. By studying the contemporary and historical literature on the subject, looking to the scriptures, and conducting interviews with seasoned preachers, the author reveals some of the common causes of this phenomenon.
