Suicide is a major problem confronting every branch of the military. This study focuses on Airmen in the enlisted rank of E-4 to E-5. These Airmen are entering the ranks of the non-commissioned officer corps. Each participant was presented with a survey immediately before and after the safeTALK class to measure its effectiveness in making them more alert to the possibility of suicide, their confidence to ask directly about suicide, and connect those at risk with a keep safe connection. Sixty days after the class, another survey was sent by e-mail to examine the participant's retention of lessons learned in safeTALK and their willingness and ability to implement the steps for a successful intervention. Those who identified themselves as having personally experienced suicide through the attempted suicide or death of a loved one were asked to sit down for an interview with the author. Lessons learned from those who agreed to be interviewed were used to examine how their personal experience affected their motivation to help a person at risk and gauge safeTALK's effectiveness. Using the story of Jacob wrestling with God in Genesis 32:22-31 as a backdrop against which we might view suicide in more compassionate ways, the author brings our attention to the graciousness of the Divine in matters of complexity, where there is grayness and a shadow side.  This is a phenomenological study that explores the concepts of 'blessing' and 'wound' - what it is like to live with 'both/and,' rather than overcoming, as Jacob needed to learn to live with both a blessing and a wound. The study also examined the meanings of hope and hopelessness in the Latvian cultural and sociopolitical contexts. Findings of the study indicate a higher hopelessness level for men than for women in the sample. Statistical studies revealed that the suicide rate, for the past five years, has been 2.8 times the state average.  A program module was designed to raise the level of awareness, of the danger signs of suicide, in those serving in positions of leadership in the Indiana National Guard.  The research includes a study of the context of ministry, psycho-social and biblical-theological aspects of suicide. The project explored the need for such training and the reasons for the high rate of alcoholism and the growing number of suicides.  It discovered that the Cherokee pastor is the key to helping his people.  The author examined the biblical background for crisis counseling with alcoholic and suicidal persons and laid a theoretical foundation to equip pastors to minister to such persons.  The major emphasis of the project was the procedures used in selecting and training a core group of pastors in strategic areas of the Cherokee Nation.  The team concentrated on three major areas of concern in their preparation for enlarged Christian ministry.
