Systematic precautions against suicide in Korea, however, are insufficient compared to other developed countries. In the Korean military, suicide is the number one cause of death, and personal and family wounds caused by suicide are a major and difficult problem. The author researched suicide prevention education for chaplain assistants so that it could be more effective. Many topics were discussed, including what chaplain assistants can strive for in terms of suicide prevention for soldiers who are living together with them in the army. Even though the suicide-prevention system targeting the rank and file is quite well-organized and enforced, many officers are excluded from its reach. In recognition of this problem, I sought to test the feasibility of using a trial death education program as a means to help prevent suicide among the army officers. To this end, I designed and put to trial a program of death education especially for the officers within the Korean Army. The founding hypothesis of this study is that death education is capable of helping officers fight the suicidal urge by encouraging them to reflect on themselves and their lives better and more actively. The project develops suicide prevention classes and techniques utilizing logotherapy techniques.  Stress-related anxiety and pressures of basic combat training are addressed.  Also included is a suicide prevention class developed and presented to the major commanders in an Army installation.
