This is particularly seen amongst those who come to Christ out of a Muslim background. This study began with the desire to increase the effectiveness of discipleship amongst believers from an Iranian Muslim background. It evolved into an exploration of discipleship, its foundations, its meaning, and a pathway that would lead to maturity in Christ. It centered on the question, “How can I help my brother from a Muslim background grow up to maturity in Christ?”\r\nThis question was also affected by concerns about culture. Each culture has its own priorities and concerns, the ways in which people relate, understand each other, and live together. Respecting all people includes understanding their culture. Yet culture is critiqued under the authority of the Word of God. What can be retained, and what needs to be changed, in a culture in which the people are living under the Lordship of Christ? This led to an exploration of the Kingdom of God and His universal directives in discipleship. It includes His unchanging standard of holiness and love. It includes the spiritual battle in which discipleship takes place, in the process of traveling to the Lord’s goal for each disciple, maturity in Christ. It included questions such as, “What is maturity in Christ?” and “How do I arrive at maturity in Christ?” This study proposes to make a start in the discussion of discipleship to maturity in Christ. It presents principles and a pathway towards this goal. Always in view is the application of this process into the lives of dear brothers and sisters who have come to Christ from a Muslim background, of which some examples are included. May this study be a blessing and help to all believers, particularly to those serving believers from a Muslim background.\r\n\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dminadmin@tiu.edu"],"_version_":1823054913319469056,"timestamp":"2025-02-03T16:37:28.231Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-12-02T17:55:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-12-02T17:55:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b8b06a9a-fd53-4062-93bd-7d331a911594","accessControl_ssim":["f060a932-6394-4298-af58-3bf959b145a9"],"depositor_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"title_tesim":["Idol notions : exploring the impact of the second commandment on the Exodus community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-12-02T17:55:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-12-02T17:55:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["67fa8db4-ef3d-4906-9418-49863b671d6f"],"hasLease_ssim":["17e002a3-7d28-4de2-a2d3-951ae26f498e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts in Biblical \u0026 Theological Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2023"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ochoa, Anna L."],"subject_tesim":["Idols and images--Worship--Biblical teaching","Idolatry","History","Criticism, interpretation, etc","Middle East","Bible. Why was idol worship such a draw in the ancient Near Eastern world, being in fact the final straw that sent Israel into the ultimate covenant curse of exile (cf. Ezek 6)? Archaeological records have revealed an enthralling polytheistic practice that remained entrenched for millennia, which involved the ritual animation of an idol with the god’s living presence, to be thereafter served relentlessly by ritual performance within a human-divine interplay directly opposed to Yahweh’s revealed truth. The second commandment forbade such image making and worship on its face to God’s people.\r\n\r\n Much modern scholarship, however, has questioned the dating of the composition of the OT, and the idol ban of the second commandment in particular. Such historical criticism tends to hold an evolutionary view of Israelite religious development, proposing a national origin in polytheistic belief and a later shift into a new understanding of the aniconic worship of their primary deity. This follows a larger trend in biblical scholarship which proposes a cadre of later redactors with varied agendas and theological emphases who assembled the Hebrew Bible; and it was one of these who purportedly instated the strict image ban for his own, much later, political moment. These critical views ultimately hold the biblical text as a biased and unreliable historiography.\r\n\r\n This thesis will instead employ a methodology that treats the text in its final form and adheres to a traditional view of divine instigation and guidance of Israel’s national worship. It will argue that the idol ban of the second commandment was necessarily delivered at Israel’s founding, being rooted in God’s immutable character and making explicit reference to the Creator-creation distinction in Genesis, a cosmology distinctly rebutting that of ancient polytheism. Further, a comparative method will be used to study the idol consecration rituals of the ancient Near East, revealing that idolatry was much more insidious than merely “bow[ing] to a block of wood” (Isa 44:19). As a gateway device to a deadly philosophy, idols were fundamentally and terminally opposed to the truth of God. With a view to the literary and theological unity of the text, therefore, it is imperative that the image ban be delivered to the exodus community at their national founding, and that it should stand in stone for Israel, and for the church, for all time.\r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2023/Ochoa_Anna_MABTS_2023.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1817352208169041920,"timestamp":"2024-12-02T17:55:24.794Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:53:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:34:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"305f4c38-8b77-4ebf-a976-28e263a79499","accessControl_ssim":["7c26c9cf-3cac-409e-a06b-4b16d2c65b20"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Embodied Spiritual Practices for Brown and Black Bodies Exploring Sabbath Rest"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:53:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:32:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7f8a82d9-49dd-48cf-b09f-b28ce2bb20fc"],"hasLease_ssim":["f4b0ca86-f256-4bec-a368-6b77b1d99cd7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Spiritual Direction"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gennifer B. Keller’s methodology for preaching is Christ-centered, text-centered, compassionate, exegetically sound, and pastoral. He applies some elements of text-driven preaching. This project chooses twenty of Keller’s sermons from the Old and New Testaments in three different genres (Story, Poetry, and Epistles) to examine his preaching model. This project’s primary goal is to enhance pastoral ministry’s effectiveness through preaching, particularly in moments of crisis and tragedy.John M. Frame’s Perspectives on the Word of God and Vern S. Poythress’s Symphonic Theology shape Keller’s three-perspective model for preaching. Both of them argue that applying multiple exegesis perspectives helps deliver absolute truth and relevant application in the different contexts of the audience. Keller’s preaching methodology can be named “incarnational preaching” because Christ’s incarnation and ministries are evident in all these three perspectives. The result shows that Keller applies almost equal emphasis to both biblical and situational perspectives in his sermons. Sometimes he applies more emphasis to the situational perspective than to the biblical perspective so that the modern audience could comprehend and apply biblical truth to their lives. Additionally, Keller’s personal view takes less than 14 percent of his sermons. It shows that his personal experience and preferences do not dominate his sermons. Keller is willing to share his weakness and get involved with the audience. He shows his compassion for the suffering and expresses his passion for the Gospel. Keller is like a friend of the bridegroom to show that Christ is the center of the entire wedding because “he (Christ) must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30).Keller demonstrates how to balance, integrate, and unite biblical, situational, and personal perspectives in his preaching. By observing Keller’s sermons, preachers could find that utilizing Keller’s three-perspective model helps explain the text and capture the whole picture. Preachers could learn from his methodology and examine their sermons for these three perspectives to enhance pastoral ministries."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133059840475136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:16.436Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:41Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6cfd460d-fa2b-4ff9-a398-8186d3347b04","accessControl_ssim":["fdd9a3d4-f443-4737-939a-3e5618b904f5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The place of the Ten Commandments in the Church of God pulpit"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:19:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["74d4dd63-6afc-4098-80a4-633d30d2bca3"],"hasLease_ssim":["bd37eaf6-ebde-442b-b16d-3c84f2c8a114"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip D Douglass"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew A Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Expository preaching","Social aspects","Evangelicalism","Bible--Homiletic use","Ten commandments","Preaching","Christian life","Christianity and culture","Church of God (Anderson, Ind)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore the extent to which Church of God preachers use the Ten Commandments to address their socio-political and ecclesiastical contexts. Right and wrong have largely been reduced to personal opinions even in those who regularly attend church. One pastor documented through national surveys, polls, studies, and articles how right and wrong in contemporary culture have become divorced from the Ten Commandments. Conducting research at a congregational level and among other community Christian churches, resulted in the finding that the Ten Commandments are seen as God's rules for right and wrong but not in a personal sense for one's daily life as a Christian. Many regular church goers are operating from the conviction - I know it is wrong according to God, but God forgives me in Christ, so I'll do it anyway! The pastor undertook a seven Sunday Bible study and preaching series focusing on the Ten Commandments using the lessons of the day. During the seven-week series the average of people in church increased 6% over the previous year average. The Ten Commandments series gave the congregation the truth that when it comes to God's commandments, all are sinners in need of the Saviour Jesus Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f49f809a-65b5-4566-bfbb-5756e01b6bc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135436318441472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:51:02.822Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:24:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:01:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fdd85ebb-749a-49e7-b125-0e266f7ba506","accessControl_ssim":["2fc02af1-24bf-4f97-a2f2-9dc267ec68de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reading the word with the heart: Luther's Large Catechism and the practice of faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:24:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:23:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e874693e-4118-4201-bf2b-d0ccf66d393d"],"hasLease_ssim":["787309d1-8cfe-4e87-9202-d1e29fb61f46"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Frank Rogers"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Margaret V Schultz-Akerson"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Catechisms","Luther, Martin, 1483-1546","Spiritual life--Christianity","Ten commandments"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project recognizes Luther's Large catechism as an underutilized resource and assesses its potential for the ecumenical field of spirituality. The hypothesis and accompanying corollaries were studied using an already existing Jungian study curriculum produced by the Centerpoint Foundation, called Centerpoint I. The curriculum was enhanced by the addition of Ira Progoff's journaling methodology, the personal journals of the participants being the major evaluative data sources for the research itself. The data was generally in support of the hypothesis and its corollaries, namely, that our polytheistic tendencies are rooted in the human psyche and that heightened personal consciousness equates with a movement from polytheism toward monotheism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7d2ba5b6-aeec-459a-aaec-e1eed75d32f0"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134279792590848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:32:39.873Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:14:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:13:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ebd96f56-596d-46c8-98ac-38e89c38bb41","accessControl_ssim":["5a2826af-4954-470d-a09f-2a58f12fde8d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping a generation X ministry team to communicate effectively the ten commandments in a series of postmodern worship services"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:14:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:52:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["42f9697e-2e56-4041-8bf1-ed58df2bd16e"],"hasLease_ssim":["0e7ce6e0-f71e-44c6-9252-38e299145e82"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leroy Gainey"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bradley C Stahl"],"publisher_tesim":["Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with youth","Ten commandments","Generation X"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["'Equipping a Generation X Ministry Team (GXMT) to Communicate Effectively the Ten Commandments in a series of Postmodern Worship Services' was a project designed to reach Gen Xers through ministry in the local church led by Gen Xers.
