There is, however, confusion in the church today about the meaning of salvation.  One traditional approach to understanding salvation, substitutionary atonement, has been questioned by many contemporary theologians.  In this project an eight-week class on understanding salvation today will be designed and taught.  The project focuses on the work of five modern Reformed theologians: Gustav Aulen, John Stott, Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Paul Fiddes.  The approach to understanding salvation taken by each is described and consideration is given to the contribution each can make to a contemporary understanding of salvation.  Scripture passages and a background essay for each of the eight lessons are given.  This class was taught to a group of adults at the First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the fall of 1994."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127617304264704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:46:46.029Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:13:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:08:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"20f14045-221f-4d9c-84f6-bc0419d1693e","accessControl_ssim":["fb9714fb-d01f-4fd3-a494-e335348c8f49"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Toward the reformed inclusivity of 'winter Texans' -- an educational approach with the sessions of Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:13:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:06:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["edfa2e49-e116-41be-ba0e-0c8aa8416ad8"],"hasLease_ssim":["d56bfadc-c543-4b60-a4d4-dfe1aa2d6c5c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Susan L Nelson"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles S Palmer"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Theology, Reformed","Church growth","Visitations (Church work)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The theses of the project are: 1) that inclusivity is central to Reformed faith; 2) this understanding can be appropriated through an intentional study of Reformed inclusivity, church growth principles, and 'winter Texans'; and 3) exposure to who 'winter Texans' are and what their needs are will encourage Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church to follow Reformed inclusivity. Cultural problems have effected a weakened prayer-life for many Reformed Christians. Sociological conditions have led some to a loss of faith and lack of trust.  For others, role changes in the family have led to a breakdown in familial religious responsibility.  Prayer in the Reformed tradition is then looked at from biblical, historical and theological perspectives.  Biblically, prayer is communion with God. Prayer is traced historically from early Jewish worship to the Puritans.  Theologically, the paper looks at the transcendent and immanent attributes of God, the effect of sin, justification and sanctification on relationships, and how the church community influences our approach to God through prayer. To revitalize prayer-life, various methods of listening, meditating, keeping a journal, and healing are proposed and explained.  The strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed tradition are defined.  Recommendations of ways to move toward communion with God conclude the summary."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720510822547456,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:07:07.881Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Allen Y Lin","hits":1,"label":"Allen Y Lin"},{"value":"Charles S Palmer","hits":1,"label":"Charles S Palmer"},{"value":"Ernest T Thompson","hits":1,"label":"Ernest T Thompson"},{"value":"Rosalie J Potter","hits":1,"label":"Rosalie J Potter"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Reformed","hits":4,"label":"Theology, Reformed"},{"value":"Chinese Evangelical Church of San Diego (San Diego, Calif)","hits":1,"label":"Chinese Evangelical Church of San Diego (San Diego, Calif)"},{"value":"Church growth","hits":1,"label":"Church growth"},{"value":"Evangelistic work","hits":1,"label":"Evangelistic work"},{"value":"Prayer","hits":1,"label":"Prayer"},{"value":"Salvation","hits":1,"label":"Salvation"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":1,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"},{"value":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"1982","hits":1,"label":"1982"},{"value":"1989","hits":1,"label":"1989"},{"value":"1995","hits":1,"label":"1995"},{"value":"2005","hits":1,"label":"2005"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":1,"label":"Miscellaneous"},{"value":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Columbia Theological Seminary","hits":2,"label":"Columbia Theological Seminary"},{"value":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School","hits":1,"label":"Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"},{"value":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
