We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin. In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. It examines women in the American economic scene, and the rapid entrance of women in the job market following WW II. To ease the pressure of combined job and home responsibilities, many women have dropped out of church. The project reflects the process in which First United Methodist Church of Kearney worked at solving this problem. The theological basis was explored in the light of the writings of the Bible and the writers of women's theology of today. Value conflicts were studied and the impact considered. Programs were designed and implemented into ongoing activities of the church. The programs were then evaluated according to effectiveness in meeting specific needs. Survey instruments were designed and used throughout to measure response and evaluate the success of the program changes. A local Commission on the Status and Role of Women was created along National Church Committee lines. Change was not dramatic but did occur: changed congregational attitudes and raised consciousness level of women of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716924526952448,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:07.722Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:00:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0a19aae9-e675-446e-b15b-a9199d795db1","accessControl_ssim":["7e3d6d45-1e26-4117-836c-48f53e22842d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Baptism: its integrative function for pastoral ministry and for the life and the practice of the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:27:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:24:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9c9bf46e-ae7d-40d1-8e69-b40c273a3d77"],"hasLease_ssim":["824c82b5-eef2-428e-8c36-e74a5576eaf5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Paul Roth"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald L Rygh"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible--Theology","Pastoral theology","Baptism","Theology","Paul, Saint, Apostle","Infant baptism"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Baptism is so foundational to the Christian faith and to the life of the New Testament church that it may be said to embrace everything else. The pastoral ministry, given by Christ and operating by his authority, is a baptismal ministry to a community of baptized. The faith and practices of that community are accountable to and illumined by the doctrine of baptism. This thesis is an effort in both historical and biblical theology."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716294835044352,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:00:07.202Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:20:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:30:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"08f5f595-78a7-4a30-b753-ef0023141d12","accessControl_ssim":["55c420be-fcd4-450f-946d-22d4a53a91b2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Confirmation: a rite of initiation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:20:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:22:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["258e6061-bd31-4378-a9a1-0703b591ee4b"],"hasLease_ssim":["8e7916b5-7792-4923-be21-ca347589c319"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["L Howard Grimes"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Edwin Albright"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Grace (Theology)","Wesley, John, 1703-1791","Baptism--Methodist Church","Theology","Infant baptism","Confirmation--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of the practicum was to design a model for confirmation training where seventh grade boys and girls could be involved in total initiation processes where both grace and faith are supporting ingredients in the identity of the Christian. Members of the congregation were involved in disciplined study and living for an eleven week period. The theological issues were: 1) the nature of the church as redemptive community; 2) Scripture as an authority for theology; 3) dangers of legalism moderated within a gospel of grace; 4) the quality of life within the small group; and 5) the difficulties of pluralism within a small group. The conclusions were: 1) The small group model was ineffective for church renewal but very effective in pastoral care; 2) The image of the pastor as chief teacher was reinforced; 3) The local church can allocate only a portion of its time and energy to small groups without seriously neglecting other important ministries; and 4) The local church needs more help in understanding the dynamics of human relationships."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127132485713920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:39:03.670Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":8,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
