In this context, resurrection and the providence of God are addressed through a series of select questions and answers posed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Subjects such as the beginning of the universe, divine governance, original sin, resurrection and new creation are held in juxtaposition with scientific theories of Big Bang cosmology, thermodynamics, death of the universe, and evolution. Not many churches have a well-defined plan to promote their members’ ongoing spiritual formation. Yet many pastors in the Reformed tradition have discovered a vision for spiritual formation and renewal in the writings of Gordon-Conwell theologian Richard Lovelace. Lovelace’s Dynamics of Spiritual Life (1979) has been credited by pastors including Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian, New York City) as the most influential book in their philosophy of ministry and church strategy. However, Lovelace’s work was generally theoretical and remains unknown to modern leaders. This study asks: How do pastors and leaders in the Reformed traditions, specifically between ages of 35-50, apply the renewal principles of Lovelace in the life of their churches? Further, how has Lovelace’s vision for spiritual renewal been realized in these congregations?\r\n\r\nThis study will include a review of literature focused on three key areas to understand in promoting spiritual renewal in Reformed congregations: (1) Spiritual renewal according to Richard Lovelace, particularly in the areas of prayer, community, and mission; (2) the apostle Paul’s theology of spiritual life, especially the gospel, spiritual life, regeneration, the Holy Spirit, resurrection, prayer, community, and mission; and (3) organizational and congregational culture, including how churches can promote their desired values, behaviors, and practices in congregational life.\r\n\r\nThis study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors and leaders from various Reformed churches and ministries who are either familiar with Lovelace’s theories or have been unknowingly shaped by them. The methods of qualitative research are detailed, the process and strengths of qualitative research are discussed, and the researcher’s position and the limitations of the study are acknowledged.\r\n\r\nThe interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: (1) How do pastors in Reformed churches describe their theology of spiritual renewal? (2) How do they promote spiritual renewal among their congregants—in terms of prayer, community, and mission? (3) How do they integrate spiritual renewal into the culture of their congregation or organization? (4) In what ways and to what extent do their views of spiritual renewal compare to Lovelace’s theories?\r\n\r\nThe study concludes with a final discussion of Lovelace’s key insights and contributions, a summary of the findings, and recommendations for promoting spiritual renewal in churches in the future. It arises from a pastoral and theological need within the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Victoria, Australia, particularly in response to the challenges posed by the Victorian State Government’s “Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act.” The project seeks to equip clergy with a coherent and Orthodox theologically grounded response to issues surrounding gender dysphoria. Drawing on Holy Scripture and the living Tradition of the Orthodox Church—especially Patristic writings, liturgical theology, and contemporary Orthodox scholarship—this study articulates an Orthodox theological anthropology that affirms the unity of body and soul and the God-given nature of gender. A study guide was developed and trialed in collaboration with a small group of clergy from the Diocese of Melbourne to evaluate its efficacy in enhancing pastoral engagement and theological clarity. The guide was found to significantly improve participants’ understanding of the Orthodox perspective on gender and increased their confidence in ministering pastorally to individuals experiencing gender dysphoria. Due to a hurricane’s social and psychological impact, many find it difficult to return to normal life. Unfortunately, most priests are unaware of this problem that affects our parishioners. While some may scratch it on the surface, others avoid preaching about trauma because they do not know how to address it in their preaching. I developed and tested a program that could help priests in the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao, Puerto Rico, craft and deliver trauma and hope-informed sermons using the narrative preaching approach. The narrative approach affords preachers a wonderful opportunity to communicate the gospel in exciting, new, and unexpected ways.\r\nChapter 1 outlines the project’s ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 explores the project’s interdisciplinary framework. It shows how other fields of knowledge, especially sociology and psychology, collaborate with theology to help hurricane trauma survivors. Chapter 3  presents the thesis project’s biblical and theological foundations. It explores “traumatic suffering” and Christian hope. It anchors on the New Testament perspective, which speaks of suffering redeemed by Christ and invites Christians to come to the life of faith in our suffering. It also explores The Apostolic letter of Pope John Paul II, Salvifici doloris, and the Encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI, Spe salvi, which, respectively, provide a lens into the Church’s teaching on suffering and the nature of Christian hope. Chapter 4 presents the project’s homiletic framework. It defines and discusses trauma and hope-informed preaching and highlights why a trauma and hope-informed sermon is essential to helping hurricane trauma survivors on the path to recovery and healing. It also sets the homiletical structure for crafting and delivering trauma and a hope-informed sermon using the narrative approach. \r\nDuring the Winter (16 February to 13 April) of 2024, three preachers—Priests of the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao and seventeen (focus group) members of the La Resurreccion Parish community—participated in a seven-week trauma and hope-informed seminar and sermon series. Hence, Chapter 5 sets out the project intervention events. This is particularly seen amongst those who come to Christ out of a Muslim background. This study began with the desire to increase the effectiveness of discipleship amongst believers from an Iranian Muslim background. It evolved into an exploration of discipleship, its foundations, its meaning, and a pathway that would lead to maturity in Christ. It centered on the question, “How can I help my brother from a Muslim background grow up to maturity in Christ?”\r\nThis question was also affected by concerns about culture. Each culture has its own priorities and concerns, the ways in which people relate, understand each other, and live together. Respecting all people includes understanding their culture. Yet culture is critiqued under the authority of the Word of God. What can be retained, and what needs to be changed, in a culture in which the people are living under the Lordship of Christ? This led to an exploration of the Kingdom of God and His universal directives in discipleship. It includes His unchanging standard of holiness and love. It includes the spiritual battle in which discipleship takes place, in the process of traveling to the Lord’s goal for each disciple, maturity in Christ. It included questions such as, “What is maturity in Christ?” and “How do I arrive at maturity in Christ?” This study proposes to make a start in the discussion of discipleship to maturity in Christ. It presents principles and a pathway towards this goal. Always in view is the application of this process into the lives of dear brothers and sisters who have come to Christ from a Muslim background, of which some examples are included.
