The concept of base communities is used to test the readiness of a Hispanic church for ministry from a liberation perspective, and a couple of community-identified needs are chosen as testing grounds for the church's readiness for a theology of liberation. Since very few helpful models or institutions are likely to be available, the church, through the local congregation, must be able to offer a viable ministry of reconciliation.  This project focuses first on an analysis of the circumstances which presently are contributing to the pain and separation. Secondly, it attempts to build a practical theology where belief and practice are mutually independent. The assumption that underlies the project is that if teachers can experience intersection between personal story, personal experience, the biblical story, and faith community experience, to tell one will be to tell the other.  As a result, the Bible will become biographical, which makes it easier to communicate.  Teaching then will be discernibly different in the church education experience.  The project was a six-week teacher education experience for mid-high teachers that utilized denominational materials as the primary resource. The project includes five study sessions and five sermons preached in appropriate worship settings. Control groups measure the success of the project. The program stressed the personal-relational nature of the Gospel. The project implemented in the Mountain View United Methodist Church in the Fall of 1987.  It organized persons into small groups for study, sharing and reflection.  During the ten week implementation period of the project, participants met to study prepared materials. The author sought to use the theological criteria of experience, reason, scripture and tradition by studying Wingeier's 'Working Out Your Own Beliefs'.  He taught how Douglas Wingeier, John Macquarrie and Donald Bloesch applied these same criteria to their theological studies. The different criteria that each theologian stressed was discussed with an adult class as they learned to accept or reject each criteria and to follow their own theological guideline in faith translation.
