The author studies spiritual development, using the theories of Kegan, Erikson, Fowler, Gilligan, and Loder. The history and theology of the catechism that helped shape the identity of the German Reformed people was researched. The author developed a pedagogy, based on Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, for teaching the catechism in the 21st century. A case study was developed based on a six week study of two churches in the United Church of Christ. The author made the following conclusions: 1) Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory, as pedagogy, offers different approaches to adults in various stages of their spiritual development. 2) Adults do not have an adequate concept of sin; as a result they are confused about how grace is operative in their lives; therefore, they do not know what it means to live a life of gratitude. 3) Without a strong identity, based on core documents of the faith, there is no congregational loyalty. Method: from the fields of suicidology, death and dying, theology, and pastoral care, the author presents characteristics of adolescent suicidal behaviour, explores despair and hope, applies these understandings to the process of healing, and compares the research to informed responses from United Church of Christ pastors. To explore this situation 'when worlds collide,' three groups within a UCC congregation responded to several narrative sermons. One group participated in sermon preparation discussions lasting several hours. Another attended a pre-worship Bible study on the text. The third heard the sermon in worship. The project compares the experience of interim time between five small churches that chose an 'intentional' interim and five small churches that chose to have a traditional 'Sunday supply.' This project explores the effectiveness of an educational process designed to identify the content of these early experiences, examine the Biblical witness concerning stewardship, and provide an opportunity for decisions about behavioral change. Giving behavior of adult leaders from the United Church of Christ is also examined in relation to income, education, generation, and theological perspective. Three black pastors helped to create an interview protocol that could explore and define the black church tradition in the UCC. The interviews analyzed the pastor's context in ministry, authorization for ministry, Sunday morning worship practices, preaching, music, communion, baptism, special days, and printed resources used in worship. The reports reveal a remarkably consistent worship practice that reflects the black, 'rural' worship tradition of this region.  A central ritual act of nearly all churches in the study is believer's baptism by immersion.
