The basic purpose was to aid United Methodists in the appropriation of their catholic heritage through an actual study of the pertinent eucharistic writings of the two Wesleys.  The largest part of the dissertation deals with the following eucharistic motifs found in the Wesleyan literature: constant communion, real presence, sacrifice and medicine of immortality.  Attention is also given to Wesley's 1784 Sunday Service, Methodism's Anglican roots and the progress of liturgical renewal in the United Methodist Church. There is a window into this neglected past through the saints of the Church.  During a six week 'Festival of Saints', a local United Methodist Church studied five saints: John of Damascus, Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther, Mary McLeod Bethune and C. S. Lewis.  Each week the Sunday worship centered around the saint and the appropriate part of the tradition. Its hypothesis is that merging local churches is a viable alternative to closing them.  To test this hypothesis, the author reviews related literature, conducts a parish survey, interviews four lay leaders and examines financial records, worship attendance and membership reports before and after the merger.  The findings confirm the hypothesis. Dialogue is appropriate because the basic theme of the Bible is God's passion for reconciliation and dialogue is a means of reconciliation.  Dialogue is viable because, in terms of James Fowler's stages of faith, even people who have not developed beyond the second stage are capable of responding to dialogue in a limited way.
