The pastoral concerns addressed through preaching emerged out of the economic crisis occasioned by a rapid decline in the heavy manufacturing industry of the Great Lakes region.  Pastoral care and preaching are brought together when the preacher who proclaims 'God is for us,' offers a vision that leads to growth in grace.  Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. Ten sessions were designed to be used as a curriculum in the local church which will encourage study, dialogue, and challenge the individual participants.  The ability of the author, project associates, participants, and the church to handle conflict productively is documented.  It also describes how the persons involved were enriched by developing skills and confidence in conflict management. It presents a biblical and theological foundation for evangelism and growth.  The study condenses general church growth theories and principles into their main principles and highlights unique features of growth in the middle-sized church.  It enumerates the distinctive features of United Methodist churches which may help or hinder growth.  The project then examines growth potential of a specific congregation.  It suggests a model for a five year growth plan and a process for implementing these recommendations. Power was returned to the traditional majority.  The charismatic and traditional members were brought together through eleven program committees which were reorganized and developed according to Paul's analogy of the body of Christ (I Cor 12-14), the sermons of John Wesley and the United Methodist Council on Ministries structure.  This small group movement drew in eighty nonactive, traditional members.
