Having studied the congregation's history and ethos in concert with a sister church, the aim of the project was to develop a leadership covenant with the two congregations.  Working with the joint pastor-parish relations committee, a variety of instruments were used to discern an appropriate leadership style in that situation. In this dissertation the author through research, experience, and evaluation has considered several evidences of affluence, some sources of, and results from it.  The research shows that unchurched Americans are disproportionately white, young, educated, male, and affluent. The pastoral concerns addressed through preaching emerged out of the economic crisis occasioned by a rapid decline in the heavy manufacturing industry of the Great Lakes region.  Pastoral care and preaching are brought together when the preacher who proclaims 'God is for us,' offers a vision that leads to growth in grace.  Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. The ability of the author, project associates, participants, and the church to handle conflict productively is documented.  It also describes how the persons involved were enriched by developing skills and confidence in conflict management. For eleven weeks they met with the pastor weekly for a Bible study experience that applied principles and techniques from neuropsychology and neurolinguistic programing. Nine United Methodist congregations ranging from 500 to 999 members were studied. Questionnaires were given before and after the use of the study guide to test its effectiveness. The questionnaires studied a wide range of factors, from social attitude to church involvement.  They also examined attitudes toward the denomination and its leadership.  The factors that tend to correlate with rejection of the new hymnal are: white, male, irregular worship attender, and non-committee member. These themes were introduced through a Bible study and a series of worship services.  Methods of research included personal interviews as well as questionnaires.
