Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. But this change is possible only when we intentionally seek to understand ourselves as racial and cultural beings and to increase cross-cultural competency through educational and training experiences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131928795021312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:17.787Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:27:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:07:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9de4054b-4995-4faf-a3ab-61ceffdc7d45","accessControl_ssim":["37cd064c-50be-44f8-b071-20779a595258"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Generative teaching congregations' and effective supervisors-mentors in theological field education: a test of model characteristics through the lens of Duke Divinity School students"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:27:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:45:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bff11014-d837-40bc-8439-d97bd41f0612"],"hasLease_ssim":["1620617c-cca5-4862-96ca-549f6f84920d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["R Leon Carroll"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Connie Mitchell Shelton"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Language and religion","United Methodist Church","Comparative studies","Religious education--Teaching methods"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study finds that seminarians participating in theological field education can better articulate contextual learning when offered a framework of detail-specific language. I will also determine if clergy morale and the burn-out rate are directly related to whether or not one has a committed and disciplined spiritual life. The project compiles information collected from an anonymous survey distributed among local church clergy in the Central Texas Conference. The practicum/project was begun in January, 2005, after the survey had been created the previous November. Surveys were collected over a six week period and then the information was tallied over the next three months. Those completing the requested information were told verbally or in writing that it was an anonymous survey and they were not to sign it anywhere on the three-page questionnaire. The goal of the survey was to determine if clergy are practicing spiritual discipline habits and whether or not they are cynical or encouraged about ministry in the local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127285607170048,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:41:29.698Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:10:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"68beef66-4c3f-4e72-a3cc-eda6e589b824","accessControl_ssim":["ec345f31-f43a-45f3-a5fe-1c9a3ce45984"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Disruption in the family: a study of United Methodist churches that have experienced clergy divorce"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:10:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:12:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4a0ca5fa-827d-4980-a73d-df9aded265ac"],"hasLease_ssim":["44daa03b-4bf4-4c70-8381-2ee7e96ed9a5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daniel W Zink"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bruce E Baumberger"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Church work","Clergy--Divorce","United Methodist Church","Parishes"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Drawn into the emotional tornado of clergy divorce, a local church can find itself disoriented and thrown off balance. Pastors who intentionally set up new systems in their churches to continue mission work experienced the most satisfaction; and, 3. Servant evangelism served as a culturally congruent model of outreach allowing pastors to deploy their lay people in evangelistic outreach."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134486454337536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:35:56.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:24:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"20204bf7-b7c2-4dfb-8bc0-c5a295f94baf","accessControl_ssim":["a1753572-ac68-46f2-a7c5-961fa6809ccf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Toward a more multicultural session of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:24:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:05:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b76a4ac2-1984-4610-a82b-eb1015cc690e"],"hasLease_ssim":["856c8783-b15b-4594-b1ff-f7e8ec8d6181"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Cormode"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lois Root McAfee"],"keyword_tesim":["United Methodist Church--California-Pacific Conference"],"publisher_tesim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Frank, Thomas Edward","United Methodist Church","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author argues that this culturally plural era necessitates John Wesley's essential conferencing questions of 'what to teach, how to teach, and what to do' be preceded with 'who shall teach,' changing the context of this diverse session's conferencing.
