The author suggests that what has been traditionally termed and understood as the 'Black Church' is not a sufficient descriptor of the experience of African, African-American, and Caribbean people coming together as one community of faith. Thus, the project seeks to lead the congregations to embrace their cultural diversity using a new paradigm: 'The Africultural Church'. The term 'Africultural' is used to describe a multiethnic faith community of persons of African ancestry, which strives to be wholly Christian and multicultural, yet celebrates its Africanness. It is understood that issues arising form ethnocentrism may challenge this new community. Specifically, there may be cultural distances and stereotypes that must be overcome to effectively engage in ministry. To this end, the project explores the cultural consciousness of the three congregations with respect to worship practices, mission and ministry, and lay leadership; best practices derived from these Africultural ministry settings; and the role of the pastor in leading the congregations to more faithfully embrace their cultural diversity. A model of community transformation is also proposed, which uses Bible study and a study circle process to raise cultural consciousness and promote diversity. Liberation theology, John Wesley's notion of a 'catholic spirit' and personality development theory are theological and theoretical foundations for the model. Using this model, the project seeks to identify held stereotypes and cultural conflicts in one congregation and move that congregation toward the affirmation and wider embrace of its cultural diversity. From that experience, further implications for pastoral leadership and ministry strategy in Africultural communities are drawn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714856870346752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:15.852Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:05:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b117583e-9dd8-4335-957a-42a82ca67cb4","accessControl_ssim":["1b19fc56-1f0a-4bfc-8a4c-9f729887de35"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Welcoming the stranger: practices of hospitality as a prophetic witness to gay and lesbian persons in the United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:39:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6ac141cc-3a3f-4d94-97a2-a4a4454c7bff"],"hasLease_ssim":["83d0fbf2-1130-411e-ad01-92797420aeaa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Christopher H Evans"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Patrick Colatch"],"publisher_tesim":["Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Gay men","Lesbianism","Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Thesis: Practices of hospitality can be a prophetic witness of welcome for gay and lesbian person in the United Methodist Church. The author researched opinions of biblical scholars and Christian theologians, interviewed gay and lesbian Christians, and studied three congregations in order to develop models of hospitality that welcome gay and lesbian people into the fellowship of United Methodist congregations. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. The issue of spousal abuse has combined with theological, biblical and socio-cultural misunderstandings. Misquoted Bible verses, exaggerated theological doctrines, and teachings in the church have added more guilt and self-denouncement to the suffering for victims of spousal abuse. This, in turn, provided the abusers with an excuse, a rationalization, and a justification for the abuse. It is time to clarify the wrongful misunderstandings and prejudices in the new millennium. We should open a new era of the church in Christ, as a model for God's reign, void of discrimination among Jews, Greeks, women, men, both slaves and free. At the same time, in Korean culture and surroundings, unless we change the dominant subordinating social structure that is patriarchal and gender exclusive, and shatter the systematic cultural structure, it is impossible to get rid of the roots of abuse which are deeply embedded in the cultures and lives of Koreans. This study attempts to clarify the realities of domestic violence, research the ways to help the abusers and the victims of spousal abuse, and establish such guidelines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791125653706244096,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:15:33.396Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f06872a6-af7f-4c88-ab81-6d26424e4087","accessControl_ssim":["62f8ea4b-d260-451f-a249-4d13af3a4771"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prayers, presence, gifts, and service: the development of active membership in a United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:59:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35d56fce-2f97-4f40-bd82-097297799706"],"hasLease_ssim":["6786f45b-b527-48dd-8d18-ef332a5a2fac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Zachary W Eswine"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["L Joseph Scheets"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First United Methodist Church (Collinsville, Ill)","Small groups","Church work","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to discover factors that contributed to the development of active church membership in The First United Methodist Church of Collinsville, Illinois. This qualitative case study of thirty-three participants revealed that the primary reason for their active membership was rooted in relationships and participation in small groups including lay ministries. A second reason was their commitment to lay ministry. The third reason emerged from religious consumerism and opportunities for faith development. The participants saw God at work in their church through the people of the congregation, and the denomination itself was of nominal importance."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131638257680384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:50:40.709Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:56:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:14:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a918d361-835a-4d24-b995-eb3e022148c1","accessControl_ssim":["89cff9d8-426c-4c4f-8021-97b53b32a0ee"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Initiating spiritual growth through the sacraments in a local United Methodist church using the teachings of John Wesley. . ."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:56:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:01:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a4f9a0a4-a8b7-4ba6-ba16-70a0c5b55d11"],"hasLease_ssim":["f7e488b9-d4d0-404e-890b-bf9addbf53cf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Laurence Hull Stookey"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
