With the population decline and aging of the Upper Midwest, many congregations are no longer able to support full-time ordained pastors. Congregations of several denominations have pressed into service licensed local pastors, and other lay persons to preach. United Methodist preachers serving in rural parishes in Iowa were coached in various aspects of preaching. Issues addressed in the project include: 1) whether members of the local congregation have a clear understanding of the relationship between the sacrament of Holy Communion and the mission of the church, 2) whether a more complete knowledge and understanding of Holy Communion has an impact upon their perception of the church's mission, and 3) whether the way in which Holy Communion is practiced influences the way in which they attempt to fulfill the mission of the church. The author used Jeremiah 29:7 as an interpretive lens through which to view biblical and Wesleyan sources. He also studied local demographics and three existing one-day events. The author concluded that there is a link between these sources and a contemporary understanding of the relationship between church and community. In May of 2010 these congregations were merged together to better serve the Dacula community. The focus of the merger was to make a larger impact on a growing multiracial community. The report explores the process of how the merger came about and also looks at what must be done to insure the vision of the new church created by the merger can be accomplished. The team approach within the caring community seems to fit this need. The 'team' will be an interdisciplinary team whose goal is to provide a more effective pastoral care. As an ordained clergy in the United Methodist Church, one of my biggest frustrations has always been that the 'job' is bigger than one individual can successfully accomplish. The old adage 'two heads are better than one' rings true to me for Christian ministry. Through the years, many have felt that the laity understands pastoral care as the sole duty of the paid clergy. The scriptures clearly show that Jesus did not understand ministry as an individual endeavor, but as a team approach as he sent his disciples out to minister in pairs. Also, Jesus said, 'When two or more are gathered in my name, I am in the midst of them.' This is an expression of community gathering in Christ's name and ministering not alone, but with Christ in their midst. As the Chairperson of its Order, the author examined the question: how can the Order of Elders be a viable body which will increase the number of elders in its activities and nurture them spiritually?  First the author explores the history of peer accountability and the creation of the Order of Elders based on the Wesleyan tradition and theology/doctrine.  Then the author presents a case study from the author's own experiences. A review of pastoral care and homiletical literature was conducted; twenty experienced United Methodist elders were interviewed; and four sermons were submitted that had been preached on a Sunday immediately following a preacher's difficult life event. After analysis, it was discovered that preachers relate to the topics they preach about. A survey was distributed to the clergy of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church to assess their experience of the dark night of the soul. Interior influences like struggles with sexual issues, low self-esteem, and moral conflicts contributed to a greater experience of the dark night of the soul. This project challenges two assumptions as the church seeks to respond: (1) there is a formula for success in multi-ethnic ministry, and (2) small churches are not likely to be successful. This project is an anthropological narrative of a small, rural Anglo United Methodist Church in Tennessee that initiated and sustained an effective multi-ethnic ministry with Hispanics. The tension between the church as a movement and as an institution will be explored. He surveyed numerous campus ministers, did some case studies, and did independent research into budgets.  The author found that some ministries lost one hundred percent of their funding in the blink of an eye while others were thriving.
