The goal was to increase the imagination for visioning a new life in the Mid-Ohio District of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. Representatives of thirty-nine small churches participated in workshops and developed an appreciative inquiry process that they used in their churches. In the case studies in three United Methodist congregations, participants engaged the material and answered questions before and after the study. As director of the Evangelism and Church Development Program the author was in a unique position to ask the question: could the program of Natural Church Development (NCD) be used to reverse the situation? First the author established the parallels between the ecclesiology of Wesley and the theology of Natural Church Development. Then the author taught NCD principles and invited participating churches to engage in NCD assessments. Many nonprofit organizations are continuing this trend in an attempt to address financial needs, explore new opportunities and consolidate service in overlapping markets. This project examines the initial steps of the merger process of two United Methodist Churches within the Western North Carolina Conference. Research was conducted through a combination of questionnaires and personal interviews with pastors within the Gastonia district.  Additionally, interviews were conducted with persons in various positions of responsibility within conference hierarchy. The resulting recommendations for the local church, the annual conference and the pastor are intended to enhance the pastor's health and ability to continue in relationship with the congregation.
