Implementation occurred on the Westside of Detroit, Michigan. The mixed research utilized: (1) participant observations; (2) focus groups; (3) survey and questionnaires; and (4) data collection from interviews, newspapers and published reports. The findings clarified approaches for community engagement and isolated barriers. The summary conclusion supports the church, collaborative partners and residents' engagement in community events that may significantly reduce youth violence. The study combines insights from political theology and political systems theory and establishes through questionnaire method that the missionaries are ambivalent about the use of violence as an instrument of change in the social process. The project involved a five week study on nuclear war, out of which a proposal was presented to the general board of the congregation that Rush Creek Christian Church become a 'shalom congregation'. This is a national program of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) which involves a congregation committing one year of making the issue of peace the center of their worship, study, and action.  The motion to become a 'shalom congregation' failed. This field project sought to rectify this situation within a very limited population by studying the reality of oppression from a black theological perspective with the congregation served by the author. Introduction of black theology to a black congregation helped determine the impact of these concepts on black Christians and develop information that could be used to structure future lectures on black theology for black congregations. The expectation was that there would be a greater change in the MMPI scores of the treatment group than the control group.  After the marathon, the twelve reported feelings of spontaneity, liberation, increased self-esteem, and more direct and honest communication.
