Using the Wesleyan quadrilateral to structure a theological foundation, the author argued that engagement in such concerns is essential to both. The author presented a project that provides one way to link the works of mercy to a congregation's understanding of its Christian identity and practice. The author completed the project by interviewing congregants who were engaged in the project. The author concluded that while the project did provide such a link, the work to integrate social justice and Christian identity must be ongoing."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718731265343488,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:38:50.763Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:48:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:18:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"df5385e7-7abf-4ba1-8819-1e6ff0d93c91","accessControl_ssim":["323648cc-d6bc-4067-ba9f-e64f0606fef5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The impact of Wesleyan ecclesiology on postmodern North Carolina United Methodist congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:48:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:31:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f8f0d0f-43ea-45be-b33a-57f9679c9578"],"hasLease_ssim":["7fedb76c-24d2-4e5b-846c-35447ae8a7a5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Bartlett"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harvey Gray Southern"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Wesley, John, 1703-1791","Theology","Church growth","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["'Why join the church?' The question is vexing for United Methodists who practice 'open communion' and who are open to high levels of church involvement from non-members. This project focuses on NC United Methodist's appropriation of Wesleyan ecclesiology to determine an appropriate response. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question. The answer points to a deeper understanding of preaching's power to shape a congregational ethos which in turn can lead to numerical and spiritual growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129606295650304,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:18:22.879Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
