Personal testimonies realistically depict our everyday life and are at the core of who we are as Christians. In sharing our testimony of what God has done for us in a corporate worship service, we create the space for authentic God-talk to take place among Christians. The basic hypothesis is that since the advent of the megachurch, the small Black churches have followed the trend and exchanged the mid-week testimony and Bible study service for the 'pastor's Bible study.' In losing the testimony service, members lost the vehicle to share their stories and experiences of the Holy Spirit and how they have overcome in difficult situations. The process for this study included three parts: 1) a survey to determine the congregation's knowledge and attitudes toward personal testimonies, 2) a twelve-week period where personal testimonies were included in the Sunday morning worship services, and 3) a survey following the twelve-week period to determine how knowledge and attitudes may have changed.  Attendance records were also studied.  Attendance records may indicate growth. Scripture makes it clear that love for the stranger through the practice of Christian hospitality is a mandate for the church.  Scripture also provides instruction for our conversations which are a critical element for communicating the humility, acceptance and love of the gospel.  This study has demonstrated that while the faithful practice of hospitality and redemptive conversation is a vital part of the church's mission, it is becoming increasingly difficult to be faithful in these practcies.  A review of literature and a series of interviews have exposed the worldview and external factors affecting faithfulness. When interviewees embraced the gospel, were taught by example, were encouraged, and engaged in hospitality and redemptive conversation, the daily resistance and barriers toward faithful practice were often overcome. This thesis-project was heavily influenced by my church's practice of testimony. After laying a theological foundation for testimony, this thesis-project is designed to assist preachers in preaching clear biblical sermons in which they incorporate personal faith stories. As a result of incorporating faith stories in sermons one would be engaging in a legitimate method to communicate the gospel.
