This project develops a questionnaire designed to test fifty-seven possible barriers for qualitative research on the issue using focus groups.  This process was carried out in First United Methodist Church, Millington, Tennessee, in the fall of 1995.  The project discovered four categories of barriers: lack of biblical knowledge, lack of practical knowledge on how to witness, cultural effects of Enlightenment thinking, and negative effects of a 'Christendom' mindset. Therefore, the emphasis upon ethical culture and the practice of a faithful witness are closely related. The writer conducted a ten-week seminar at Eastfield College near Dallas, training eight professors in a biblical, historical, legal and practical study of church and state issues related to education.  The participants were evaluated by a pretest and posttest as to their knowledge, attitudes and implementation in two areas: spiritual conflict, and ministry through vocation. Seven individuals were trained to teach in three designated religious groups.  Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism and the New Age movement were studied through lectures, field trips, audiovisual materials, private research and personal interviews.  The seven individuals trained seventy others within the context of two Associational Interfaith Witness conferences. A handbook on apologetics was developed, after which it was then taught to two test groups totaling twenty-four participants.  Using a Likert-type scale, a pretest and posttest were administered to the participants to measure changes in attitude toward witnessing as a consequence of studying the handbook.  The results of the tests indicated that participants' attitude concerning their witnessing improved. This has contributed to a decline and hesistancy in sharing the Christian faith.  This dissertation explores ancient and modern models of faith sharing to determine how crucial personal witness is. The eight messages centered on eight hindrances, as discovered by survey, that most hampered aggressive witnessing.  The pastor organized members into small discussion groups, prayer groups, and witnessing teams to implement this plan. The project featured group sessions in which the participants and the author reflected on their witnessing experiences. The program included four introductory training sessions, nine witnessing and reflection sessions, a role-play session and a final session for evaluation. The project resulted in slight improvement in scheduled witnessing contacts, though not in informal contacts.  Both the participants and the author received positive affirmation.
