Using insights and approaches from feminist, womanist, and other liberation theologians, it also strives to remember Jesus more clearly in his economic, political, and religious context. At the heart of this theological reconstruction is the conviction that Jesus offers salvation by making God’s “shalom justice” real on the earth through the entirety of his ministry, death, and resurrection. Each aspect of Jesus’ life, including the cross, demonstrates God’s ultimate solidarity with those who are oppressed and violated, as well as God’s capacity to bring forth healing and life out of suffering and death. This salvation is not only individual but lived out in communities which join in God’s work in the world. Many churches point to certain scriptures to undergird and provide support for gender prejudice in the rejection of a woman’s call to ministry.  This research project will consist of a quantitative and qualitative framework.  I will investigate various scriptures used against women and other scriptures that provide evidence that God calls women to preach the gospel, and I will conduct interviews with mid- and late-career women clergy.   I argue that some scriptures have been taken out of context to push a false narrative intended to silence a woman’s call to ministry, past and present.  The results I hope to discover will show that through discussing causes and challenges that arise for female clergy due to gender prejudice and sharing the reflections of the call and experience in ministerial leadership from mid- and late-career women clergy, it will be possible to educate, identify important areas of support for, and encourage early-career female clergy to inform the development of a mentoring network across denominations. Using a Womanist framework, the project determines how AME congregations and ecclesiastical leadership can respond appropriately to clergywomen's voices and leadership styles. Six AME senior pastors are interviewed and twelve senior pastors and other women clergy are surveyed identifying four areas of interviewed and twelve senior pastors and other women clergy are surveyed identifying four areas of disparity between female clergy and their male counterparts: the call to ministry, preparation for ministry, well being , and church status. The first chapter makes a case that a womanist hermeneutic can be used by preachers who are not black women. It is argued that effective preachers need tools that give them access to intersections of race, class, and gender for the sake of the preaching life. Preachers will be challenged to discern a theology of preaching to guide the use of any hermeneutic. The second chapter introduces preachers to womanist theology. The chapter begins with the origins of womanist theology in black and feminist theologies. A review of first, second, and third wave womanist contributions is highlighted. Finally, preachers will explore analysis of how non-black women are using methodologies of race, gender, and class. The third chapter moves us toward a womanist hermeneutic for preaching. A variety of styles of womanist interpretive criteria are presented.  Womanist strategies of reading and interrogating biblical texts are presented and each strategy is illustrated with a biblical text. The fourth chapter and the appendices share the testing method and results of the project. Assessment data is presented along with workshop participants' feedback and reflections. I contend that the common experience shared by African-American women and the rhetorical and literary traditions from which they arise bind them together as preachers, establishing a Womanist homiletical tradition.  My analysis of sermons included 46 sermons in manuscript form, on audio tape and some on videotape, preached by African-American women from a broad spectrum of denominations and geographical areas.
