During the Fall of 2003, students at Central Bible College voluntarily participated in a course on women in ministry. Students (one male and seven females) were surveyed at the beginning and the end of the course. Students demonstrated a significant increase in their understanding of the biblical basis for women in ministry. A directed journal (workbook) applied a feminist hermeneutic to the Hagar narrative, and was completed by twenty-four midlife women in ministry. Accessing disciplines of the arts, personal narrative development, and spiritual formation practices, participants interacted with themes of identity, paradox. direction, God image, voice, grief, fear, movement, and community. Exegetical, sociological and resultant theological debates have raged and continue to rage within both scholarly circles as well as in the local church.  Sadly, those who hold a high view of Scripture find this issue more divisive, bitter, and emotional than any other.  Denominational and church splits have occurred as a result of the ongoing debate over women ministering in local churches.  Apologetics from any number of viewpoints abound.  Yet, there is a dearth of information that provides guidance to women considering a vocational call to the 'ministry of the Word'.  Among the overwhelming number of things that have been written regarding women in the pulpit, little has been written about the women themselves. This is especially true of women who have been educated in evangelical institutions and continue to their commitment to an evangelical view of Scripture.  This thesis explores the characteristics that contribute to the effectiveness of evangelical women pursuing God's call to serve as preacher and pastor to the local church.  It identifies the barriers with which women must be prepared to deal in the pursuit of that calling and suggests skills that should be honed as well as the character traits, aptitudes and giftedness necessary for a woman to be effective.
